Cubs - Signed Blanco
Chicago Cubs - Signed C Henry Blanco to a 2-year contract.
The Cubs always seem so desperate to sign their role players to multi-year deals. My guess? They assume that everyone is as dumb as them and would love to sign Neifi Perez to a 3-year deal and getting them for only 2 years is a great bargain. Blanco’s actually a pretty good backup catcher, he’s strong defensively, has a great arm, and knows the pitchers. He’s not, however, a guy you want starting for a month if Michael Barrett goes down and I’m not signing a 35-year-old catcher to a 2-year deal if he can’t fill that role, like I would someone like Mike Redmond who can fill in when the starter tweaks something.

1. LSR Posted: November 15, 2006 at 09:23 PM (#2238855)Eh, I don't know. You have a good hitting, defensively poor catcher, I can see wanting a backup with excellent defense. If he had excellent defense and a good bat, he'd be something other than a backup catcher. Sure, Redmond would be nice, but I'm not bothered by Blanco.
White Sox fans would've killed for somebody like Blanco last year instead of Chris F. Widger and Sandy F. Alomar F. Jr.
Someone please take the checkbook away from Jim Hendry now. $100mil for Soriano is right around the corner.
Seriously though, he's a fine back up catcher. I like him. Why so much damn money?
Which was worse? I know Neifi's a laughingstock (and rightly so), but he can play 3 defensive positions (SS, 2B, 3B), was two years younger when he signed the contract than Blanco is now, and has a career OPS+ that's only 3 points below Blanco. I think it's a tough call.
Blanco has a well deserved defensive wiz rep -- and his ISO (~.150) is fairly decent, so he's not a complete offensive zero (not saying he's an offensive contributor, just that some numbers, I feel, falsely make him out to be in the realm of Neifi worthlessness. While he can't hit and won't walk, he does have a bit of pop).
The problem is 5 million and 2 years guaranteed.
Mark Parent is wishing he were a few years younger, or, that there were a few more Jim Hendrys running teams back in his heyday, I bet.
The other difference between Neifi and Blanco - there was a good chance Neifi was going to be a starter for 80-100 games when he signed that contract. Blanco doesn't figure to get even 200 PAs per season unless Barrett gets hurt/suspended again like in 2006.
Terrible, terrible move. Just awful. I'm officially over my whole "Dusty dragged Hendry down" notion. Hendry drags himself down.
The Cubs do have a lot of second basemen now, so maybe they can use one of them in a trade. I know the Cubs try to keep their prospects a secret, but I have it on good authority that Toronto is already in on Theriot.
