Cubs - Signed Hansen

Chicago Cubs - Signed PH Dave Hansen to a minor-league contract.

It really is too bad that the ever-growing pitching staffs have served to kill off the professional pinch-hitter, with the almost complete collection being Hansen, Olmedo Saenz, Greg Colbrunn, Mark Sweeney, and El Cero Gordo himself, Lenny Harris.  Going to 26-man rosters wouldn’t work; teams would just add yet another short pitching specialist.

I actually don’t see Hansen making the Cubs when push comes to shove as it would almost require one of Baker’s pets, maybe Macias, being dumped unless Baker feels confident enough having Hollandsworth and Burnitz cover center in emergencies.

what would be a useful number of pitchers for a staff?

12?

11?

I really think Macias will be dumped for Hansen. Hairston's presence makes Macias useless AND redundant. I seem to be in the minority on this prediction, however.

Good pickup, I'm surprised Hansen lasted this long to be honest.

Watch Macias be the first bat off the bench for the Cubs this year.

but he does suffer from Imminent Death Syndrome

That's the best explanation I've ever heard. Maybe Dusty has a soft spot for IDS sufferers.

Did they sign all of Hansen or just the dreamy lead singer? Oh wait, that's "Hanson..."

There are two reasons that I disagree: 1) they are paying Macias $825K, and 2) Baker likes him. The Hairston deal changes things with respect to the first item, but they would almost have to trade him rather than merely marginalize him. That may indeed end up happening.

Whatever happened to John Vander Wal? He was another PH specialist (who did get some reg-lar time in the OF).

Macias stays. He's the super-utility guy (unless Neifi starts showing up at other positions, which he hasn't yet).

Hansen's actually a pretty good guitarist....

What am I missing here? If the Cubs keep 11 pitchers, that leaves room for Perez, Macias, Hansen, Dubois, Hairston, and Blanco in reserve with Hollandsworth and Burnitz starting. I don't think this signing affects Macias at all.

There is a lot of speculation that the Cubs will carry 12 pitchers. I find that scenario more likely than Perez, Hairston, and Macias all on the same bench.

Pops, I agree that Macias is unnecessary (well, I thought that before they signed him, but it's doubly true now that they have Hairston, who is Macias with talent and ability).

My guess is they flip him in spring training for a couple of low prospects that never pan out. He really is the odd man out on this bench.

I guess the obvious question is, who the hell would trade FOR Macias?

Team looking to fill a 25th roster spot with a guy who can play the OF and 2B, SS, or 3B. As sad as it is to say, once Hollandsworth went down last year he was the best option off the Cub bench (Neifi's ichiroing notwithstanding).

He's Hairston without the talent. Someone could use him, but not in exchange for anything of value.

He's Hairston without the talent.

I don't remember who said it, but someone in a game chatter last year said Joe Borchard was "Adam Dunn without the homers and walks."
