Cubs - Signed Mabry

Chicago Cubs - Signed OF John Mabry to a 1-year contract.

No specifics on the money involved have leaked yet (or if they have, I’ve not seen them), but I’d guess this to be in the $1 million range.  There’s nothing Mabry can do that, say, Andy Abad couldn’t do for a third of the price, the exception being standing at third and pretending to be a third baseman.  This is a minor upgrade for the Cubs and if the team could have a bench of John Mabrys instead of Jose Maciases, they’d be much the better for it.  Pray Aram stays healthy - you don’t want Mabry at 3rd.

I've seen $1mil reported.

This is how Murton is getting Duboised.

As a Reds fan, I'm thrilled by the signing...misery loves company.

This is how Murton is getting Duboised.

I said it in the Furcal thread on the Cubs blog, and I'll say it here: No f'in way.

Murton in 2006 is in a much better spot than Dubois in 2005. He's already proven to be a better defender and baserunner than Dubois (nothing Jason was gonna hit was gonna overcome those defecencies in Dusty's mind) and has already had some success hitting at this level. He's not a complete unknown to Dusty.

Mabry in 2006 is not coming off the same great fluke injury season that Holly was in 2005. He doesn't have a history with Dusty yet.

I don't see it happenning.
   7. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: November 30, 2005 at 06:35 PM (#1753179)
I agree, it likely won't happen, but I don't even like the possibility. At least Dusty is unlikely to start Macias over Murton. Unlikely.

I like the suggestion that signing Mabry means the Cubs won't bring back Macias. Why can't we have both? What's the bench right now:

Blanco
Cedeno
Hairston
Mabry
?????

We need like one more guy, and knowing Dusty he's going to have to be able to play 7 positions, none of them well. Welcome back Macias!

Well,
Rest of the division should give up now. Cubs will have a bench and bullpen in 2006.

What more could you ask for?

ok -I want Steve Stone back to explain what went wrong.

Yes, even LaRussa finally stopped putting Mabry at third late last year, preferring not only Nunez but Hector Luna or even Scott Seibel.

Some days you'd look at the linuep and think:

"Mabry not today, Mabry not tomorrow, but Luna for the rest of your life."

Where do we stand on banning people from the site? I can't see another pun like this, I just can't.

I know the Cubs' offseason signings have been pretty rough on you--maybe you just need to get some fresh Eyre.

As I said in the Furcal thread, mabry he'll fill the Holly role to Murton's Dubois, and mabry he won't. I'm reasonably confident that *someone* will, though, if it isn't Mabry.

Perhaps Moses is right and the last three weeks of the season were enough to sway Dusty. I'm not convinced of this, however.
   28. Grunthos Posted: November 30, 2005 at 11:30 PM (#1753905)
Prior to reading this thread, I was blissfully ignorant of punning tendencies on the site. Wood that I could return to those halcyon moments before my knowledge was transformed! Perhaps, if I pull down my Zambrano and take a siesta, I can forget these twisted wordings. Dispense with them in the mental Dempster, so to speak, and Rusch back to the past.

If I try to fit in Maddux, this is going to stretch to the breaking point.

I Cantu take much more of this. I need a Halladay.

I nominate #32 for a Primey in the Pun Density category. Really great, Grunthos.

I couldn't reyesist coming back while this thread was still lastings. I can't let you keep drawing Blancos.

Say, how does Mabry fit into the F-Troop? Does he have a badge or a membership card?
We need like one more guy, and knowing Dusty he's going to have to be able to play 7 positions, none of them well.

If Dusty called, Shawon Dunston would listen. A former Cub and a fan favorite.

I hate to be such a self-pro-Mota, but pun fans, especially Dodger fans, may appreciate post #2 in this thread, if they haven't seen it before.

Some people may not like it, but I think this thread Holtz Upp.

a Primey in the Pun Density category

Too bad there aren't any players currently in the league named Goetz.
   45. DCW3 Posted: December 01, 2005 at 12:29 AM (#1754015)
Oh, to have such time to waste...

That whole thing was written in one night during a bout of severe insomnia.
   46. Grunthos Posted: December 01, 2005 at 12:32 AM (#1754020)
Although there were two players named Goetz in the past, both cup of coffee guys.

Goetz1
Goetz2

The second one was a Cub, though... it appears I missed my chance at baseball pun immortality.

Perhaps not at that price.

   53. Spivey Posted: December 01, 2005 at 02:53 AM (#1754254)
Ok, you're all idiots. Outside of that, this contract isn't that bad. It's not great, but reminds me in a lot of ways of the Dellucci deal. I think Mabry is a solid bet to put up a 90-100 OPS+, and for 1 million that's not bad even if it's from the outfield.
   54. Spahn Insane Posted: December 01, 2005 at 04:31 AM (#1754383)
Ok, you're all idiots.

Yeah, well--at least I know where my damn stapler is.
   55. DCW3 Posted: December 01, 2005 at 08:30 AM (#1754629)
Well, it looks like all the Cubs fans finally hadda Neifi these puns. Don't you worry about it though, 'cause Cedeno problem.

Over in the Konerko thread, it seems like a lot of Angels fans are pretty happy not to have him, maybe because they remember the last time their team signed a big, slugging first baseman, but I think they really should try to put it behind them and Mo Vaughn with their lives. Of course, I'm not a White Sox fan, so it really doesn't matter Thome.
   56. Spahn Insane Posted: December 01, 2005 at 04:48 PM (#1754892)
DCW3, you're an idiot savant. And I say that with all due admiration.
