Devil Rays - Fixed Previous Mess
Tampa Bay Devil Rays - Designated OF Alex Sanchez for assignment; released C Charles Johnson; recalled C Kevin Cash and OF Jonny Gomes
Good moves by the Devil Rays and overdue. Alex Sanchez had been pulling off the miracle of the millennium by actually contributing at the plate, but that was unlikely to keep up and his defense really turned off the Devil Rays, and rightfully so. Chris Singleton is still merely Chris Singleton, but at least he can handle center so gets to stay on the team for the moment. Toby Hall is finally hitting like people have expected him too, but hell, even if he weren’t, Charles Johnson would be pretty much useless.
This clears the way for Jonny Gomes as Tampa Bay is simply out of excuses to not play him. “He’s a mediocre defender” just isn’t an argument when a guy is hitting 446/660 in the minors, hit 338/667 in the majors in his recent cup of coffee, your team is 22-42 on the season, and your outfield consists of guys who are typically non-roster invitees or at least playing like one (looking at you Aubrey Huff!).

Why does Lou struggle to give MLB time to Gomes, a player like himself, who can hit but is "unpolished" defensively? Yet, Piniella has no such difficulty writing Taylor on the line-up card. A player who is his, and Gomes, opposite in terms of baseball related skills.
I think the Devil Rays got word that Sanchez was about to be tested for illegal substances, and didn't want the embarassment of having the first two-time offender of the drug policy. Sanchez obviously never gave up steroids as seen by his huge offensive numbers.
