Diamondbacks - DFAed Ortiz
Arizona Diamondbacks - Designated P Russ Ortiz for assignment.
With that contract, there’s no chance that they’ll be able to trade him unless it’s one of those Matsui trades in which the team pretty much offers to pay every last cent on the contract. Arizona will be doing that anyway, of course, with Ortiz making league minimum with the team that picks him up. I doubt that this is the end of the road for Ortiz (Scott Erickson keeps getting jobs for some unknown reason), but if it is, I think he may have a future career as a faith healer - he clearly has the ability to meet with people and in 2 minutes, have them walking.

Seriously, I could see the Cubs picking him up. We've cycled through everyone at AAA without much success so far, Wood's apparently still not healthy, and Prior's a question mark. Ortiz is an ex-Giant and a Dusty guy. If Marmol can't keep it up, Guzman continues to walk everyone, and Wood and Prior can't stay healthy, Ortiz might be the next solution.
What does it matter, really - the Cubs aren't winning this year. I'd still love to see them give Jerome Williams another try, but he obviously spit in the wrong person's cereal when he showed up here last year.
How about the $8 million per the Rangers are paying to not have A-Rod? They could trade the bill for Ortiz.
Hey now, watch out. Park is slowly creeping towards merely "overpaid". We are definitely getting more than we expected out of him. And no one puncture by bubble by mentioning "home/away splits". ..
For more painfully bad contracts, Beltre is earning 13 mil this year, and his contract ain't close to done. Sexson is too. Ouch.
