Diamondbacks - Signed Byrnes

Arizona Diamondbacks - Signed OF Eric Byrnes to a 1-year contract worth $2.25 million.

If they want to use Byrnes as a 4th outfielder who will start at the corners at times, this will be a useful signing for the team.  If they really give Byrnes the centerfield job and wait until 2007 for Chris Young, I like this yet - Byrnes pretty much has to be at the corners.  The Orioles were nuts to non-tender Byrnes and then sign Burnitz.

That's going to be a lot more offense than they got out of Cruz Jr. last year, and Byrnes cannot possibly be worse in CF than Cruz was last year. He was so horrible in CF in AZ that he made Bernie Williams look amazingly fast and surehanded out there.

Plus, AZ has a groundball-oriented staff, so Byrnes should work out OK as a place-holder for a few months, or maybe the entire year.

I really like the things that Josh Byrnes has done this off-season. He's looking like a really sharp young GM. If only the timing on the Theo Affair had been a little different... sigh.

Philadelphia Phillies - Claimed outfielder Josh Kroeger off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

This was a move to free up a roster spot for Byrnes. Kroeger's value had dropped a bit last year in AAA, but apparently the Phillies decided to give him a try. He probably had no future in Arizona anyhow.
