Indians - Signed Diaz

Cleveland Indians - Signed C Einar Diaz to a minor-league contract.

A good case can be made that Einar Diaz is the most valuable catcher in baseball - what other backstop can fetch Travis Hafner and Chris Young?  I think they’re going back to the well one too many times - I don’t think anyone really values Diaz anymore.

I did a very basic study of Catchers' ERA for a class I took once. It basically showed that CERA was random and fluctuated a lot and probably wasn't a skill of a catcher...except for Einar Diaz. Einar was on the bottom of the list for three years in a row, if I remember correctly.

I suspect they're bringing in Diaz and Tim Laker so they'll have backup catcher options if they move Bard. There's been some talk of Bard going to Colorado in a deal, but it's been a bit quieter lately.

I'm not really convinced Einar Diaz and Tim Laker are any better than Dusty Wathan, but I'm pretty sure that's why they're bringing in the scrub brigade at backup catcher.
