Mariners - Acquired Eduardo Perez

Seattle Mariners - Acquired 1B Eduardo Perez from the Cleveland Indians for SS Asdrubal Cabrera

Interesting move for the Indians.  Mark Shapiro apparently realizes, and rightfully, that the Indian season is more or less over and hoarding a platoon 1B doesn’t serve much purpose.  It’s harder to see why the Mariners are doing this - they’ve shown no inclination to bench Sexson and can’t even find at-bats for Petagine as it is.  Cabrera is a very promising defensive shortstop and while he hasn’t hit very well for Tacoma,  he’s also just 20 years old and thankfully doesn’t have a Dominican birth certificate.  Peralta’s hitting better as of late but it never hurts to improve minor league infield depth.

Have Venezuelan birth certificates been less fraudulent?

Also, doesn't "Asdrubal" sound like a demon from some circle of hell?

Carl Everett is hitting .161 against lefties. Perez has been brought in to DH against lefties.

FWIW, "Asdrubal" is the Spanish variant of "Hasdrubal", an ancient Phonecian/Carthaginian name, as in Hasdrubal Barca, Hannibal's brother. The letter H isn't pronounced in Spanish, so it's basically the same thing. Lots of random classical names popped into Spanish in the 16th century and have persisted, espcially in Latin America.

The ancient name means something like "aided by Ba'al". We will recall that, in the books of Judges and Kings, Ba'al <a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/index.php?search=baal&searchtype=phrase&versi>is the arch-rival of the Israelites and Yahweh</a>, and the name "Baal" stands in for all idol-worshipping demon gods. Milton puts him with among the demon generals lining up for battle early in Paradise Lost. The point is: the Mariners just got themselves a fellow with a devil-worshipping name! [/religion geek]

Yes. Most of age-gate was with Dominican BCs

I hope the Rockies get him at some point

Petagine can't do that?

I give the platoon about a week before Everett starts flipping out.

Petagine is left-handed. They were platooning Morse with Everett for the last few weeks, but Morse (a) isn't very good, and (b) is injured.

I think #6 may have been the most surprisingly content laden post I have ever read here. Good stuff.

As far as this trade is concerned, has perez gotten an at-bat yet for the mariners? I can see where they might not think they need another light-hitting shortstop though, since betancourt seems to have made a home for himself, and lopez is awesome.

Perez hasn't played much because the M's haven't faced a lefty starter since the trade. He'll get all the starts at DH against lefties.
