Mariners - Signed Ordonez, Foppert, others

Seattle Mariners - Signed SS Rey Ordonez, P Jesse Foppert, OF Tony Torcato, P Renee Cortez, 3B Brant Ust, P Cibney Bello, P Josh Kite, P Michael Wagner, and P Jared Eichelberger to minor-league contracts.

Foppert and St. Rey are the biggest names here.  Ordonez, of course, doesn’t really have much to come back to and is much an emergency option at SS as a wheelbarrow is an emergency form of transportation when your car breaks down.  Foppert is one of the 2 remaining of the Giants’ Fab 3 of Foppert, Ainsworth, and Williams a few years ago and is worth taking a flyer on.  Chances are, he’ll never be healthy enough to get a chance to get his career back on track, but it’s a no-risk signing.  I still think Foppert and Ainsworth would have been just fine if injuries hadn’t ruined their careers.

Torcato is another ex-Giant prospect whose play never really merited that prospect label.  Cortez is a tall, lanky reliever that’s hovered on the very fringes of prospectdom for the M’s but is almost certainly just going to be a AAA reliever who occasionally gets a cup of coffee on an injury-stricken team.  Ust is a A/AA/AAA tweener, too good to be playing in the Florida State League, not good enough to play with Maxim St. Pierre.  OK, I just wanted an excuse to mention his former teammate - Maxim St. Pierre is a great porno name.

Bello’s sort of interesting, surviving the California League after being made a full-time starter, but his control and command is probably too weak to let him survive at AA.  Kite and Wagner are both former fringe relief prospects (Kite for Cleveland, Wagner for the Yankees) getting a chance in the Mariner organization after solid 2006 seasons for independent Winnipeg.
