Marlins - Acquired Benitez

Florida Marlins - Acquired P Armando Benitez from the San Francisco Giants for P Randy Messenger.

The Armandillo might not be completely done, but ask yourself this question.  How much can a 34-year-old player have left if Brian Sabean wants to desperately get rid of him?  The Giants are helpfully paying all but $333,333 or so of Benitez’ remaining salary.  The Marlins give up Messenger, who has a pretty ERA so far, but rather ho-hum stuff, so nobody’s really improving here.

So whats Brian Wilson's status?

Giants are wasting 3 potential #4/#5 starters in the bullpen. Aren't they better off trading one of those for any value instead of Benitez?

Wilson's on the DL. As for the Giants, Hennessey hasn't mad much success as an SP and is a 2 pitch guy - he works well in the pen. Sanchez is probably going back to SP next year. Russ Ortiz is best limited in terms of innings.

Also, its difficult to outline just how much Blownitez needed to go - I've never known a player hated quite as much by the fan base (including myself).

What is the value of a potential #4/5 starter, exactly? A proven 4th outfielder? A proven back of the rotation starter is worth something, an unproven top of the rotation prospect is worth something, but you don't get much return on an unproven back of the rotation starter.

He's lying in bed.

is there any team Benitez has played for that the fans were ok with him after he left? he's universally reviled by the fans of his teams. and for good reason.

Thus, Posnanski's theory of releasing players during games comes one step closer to reality after that bizarre "balking-in-the-game-tying-run" incident.

The Marlins. But he has a second shot at them now.

Mariner fans, even though the trade was in exchange for Jeff Nelson. Then again, they barely remember him; Giovanni Carrara pitched more innings.

One of those trades that had to happen-for the sake of morale, if nothing else.
Giant's relief woes will continue. Over time perhaps a bullpen will jell, just don't hold your breath.
Darren-Got it-probably others do not listen to The Bare Naked Ladies.

I had assumed Benitez would be closing, but he set up Gregg last night. Is that going to be the order of things for the time being? (asks the man who owns Gregg in a fantasy league team)

For now, yes.

I would expect Benitez to be closing by the end of June. Gregg is way over his head and due for a painful reminder that he's not this good.

(Wishful thinking, perhaps, as I picked Benitez up to make up for the Torres demotion. Closers are very hard to come by in a 9 team NL-only league with 8 pitcher spots to fill.)

try a 12 team NL only league
I had Gordon...and Madson...
When I saw Myers get injured on ESPN I actually jumped out of my couch and said YES!

Still can't believe I did that over a player's injury...

I said, well... at least I have F. Cordero...
(yes in a 12 team NL only league I was greedy I admit it, Cordero and any other closer - doesn't matter who- just a closer woudl give me the league in saves)
