Marlins - Signed Amezaga

Florida Marlins - Signed SS Alfredo Amezaga to a 1-year contract.

Amezaga should be a Marlin solely to provide insurance to Hanley Ramirez.  Ramirez, while a good prospect, has no doubt been overhyped and even if he does develop as his supporters hope, it’s probably not going to be in 2006 after skipping a level.  The Marlins are not awash in experienced shortstops - Robert Andino isn’t any more ready in 2006 and both Andino and Ramirez are probably better 2006 options than either Josh Wilson or Drew Niles.  Nobody will confuse Amezaga with a good player, but he’s nowhere near as horrible as his cups of coffee suggest and if the Marlins really start bleeding at short, he’s the best fill-in in the organization.
