Minnesota Twins

Signed P Terry Mulholland to a minor-league contract; designated P Brad Thomas for assignment.

The Twins have waited a while to see if Thomas could get his stuff working on a regular basis, but it never quite happened.  That being said, I can’t think of a worse reason to let him go - Mulholland’s been done for a few years.

The Red Sox traded for Thomas.

The Sox say they were aware of his injury but they thank you for your concern NTN. What doesn't make sense to me is that the Twins needed to DFA the guy, now the Sox are allowed to just throw him on the DL. Why couldn't the Twins do that? Why wouldn't they raise a stink if the Sox try it?

That's what I mean.

The Twins can turn around and say:

The latest from the Star-Tribune about Thomas:

"If we can't agree on the player we should receive from the Red Sox, then we'll get cash," Ryan said. "It will be a non-roster player, because our 40-man roster is full.

"Brad saw our doctors the other day, and he did have a left elbow strain. Boston was aware of that."

Because Thomas is out of options, the Red Sox have to keep him in the majors, or designate him for release or assignment.

Anything but the 60-day DL counts against the 40-man, right?

NTN,

I think the rule is that you can't trade a guy on the DL. Even then, they get around it by making the guy a PTBNL.
