M’s - Reportedly Signed Ichiro
Seattle Mariners - Have reported signed CF Ichiro~! to a 5-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $100 million.
That’s a lot of money. Ichiro is a fine player, but that’s, well, a lot of money. There’s no reason to expect that he won’t age well, at least, so I don’t think the Mariners are going to get hosed here, but he’s not going to contribute ultra-superstar play. It’s too bad that, with international money shared completely, the Mariners can’t get take more advantage of Ichiro to bring in some juicy yen. The Mariners will now have to decide quickly what they’re going to do with Adam Jones.

1. GutsWhich means that Bavasi traded Chris Snelling, Emilo Fruto, and Rafael Soriano for a bench bat with no defensive value and no power and a bad #5 starter who might get squeezed off the back end of the rotation all together.
while it's true that international money is shared, ichiro seems to be one of a handful of players that's worth many millions of dollars in marketing alone. as ichiro seems to have a skill set that will age well, it strikes me as an entirely reasonable assumption that this contract will be quite profitable for the mariners, despite it's superficially ridiculous amount.

a hooker cut to look like jeannie zelasko is still a hooker.
hey!
she looks just like jeannie zelasko
she is jeannie zelasko
what?
she is jeannie zelasko
On the one hand, no one's worth $20 million/yr and we're talking about the late 30's of a small guy without much power.
On the other hand, he's durable, likely to age well, strong defensively at an up the middle position and one of the few true leadoff hitters in the game (Yeah, a few more walks would be nice, but I wouldn't mess).
He's also the star of a wealthy franchise that works with a fanbase that is more in love with eating sushi at the stadium than knowledgeable about the long grind of a 162-game season.
I'm sure he's worth it to the M's bottom line. I don't know, but he may be worth it on the field as well.
Its high comedy that anyone from Marlins management is criticizing anyone for bringing the sport down.
The day I take seriously anything david samson (good use of lowercase) says, I will put a bullet through my head.
