Nats - Signed Clayton

Washington Nationals - Signed SS Royce Clayton to a minor-league contract.

Clayton is being brought as insurance for Cristian Guzman.  This is perplexing in part because I simply know what’s the funniest thing about this signing.  Is it funny because someone brought in on a minor-league contract is competition for the guy who signed the high-profile deal?  Is it funny because Jimmy Bowden thinks Royce Clayton is a major leaguer?  Is it funny because Royce Clayton actually is bad enough to provide insurance for Guzman?  I just can’t figure it out.

None of which are as funny as Clayton's contract demands earlier this offseason.

Minor-league deal. Haha.

As a reminder, this is what ZiPS had for Guzman:

Guzman# ss .241 .279 .338

It's as if Bodes went around deliberately looking for the one guy who could be expected to perform worse than Guzman. Now why would he do that, we wonders?

And worst of all - no Big Hurt® Post???

Even if he received 700 PA, there is no way Clayton hits four home runs next year.

Mojo projections:

Guzman: .254/.293/.356
Clayton: .249/.304/.343

Nice work there, Jimmy.

Ugh. You've got to be kidding me. Why doesn't he just go and trade for Tony Womack? Unbelieveable...

I would have rather that he traded for Brandon Philips or something along those lines. At least that would have shown some creativity and the potential upside, while a longshot, is well beyond anything Royce Clayton could do.

You cant really compare a trade to an NRI

I wonder if Jimmy Bowden would be interested in an all-star caliber shortstop. As a cub fan I'd love to offer him Neifi Perez.

ROLLS ROYCE is better than Guzman. Plus, he has a cool nickname.

Damian Rolls, Royce, and Guzman are all equally good.

The really great thing about Damian Rolls is that his name is a complete sentence.
