Nats - Signed Matos

Washington Nationals - Signed OF Luis Matos; designated OF Marlon Byrd for assignment.

Not much to see here - the Nats replace their chunky, injury-prone underachieving centerfield disappointment for a slimmer, injury-prone underachieving centerfield disappointment. I won’t mock Bowden’s love of useless speedy outfielders for at least a month, though.

Byrd's already cleared waivers and been assigned to New Orleans, according to the Zephyrs' Web site.

Nats lost Brandon Watson on waivers to the Reds.

That'll teach Bowden for robbing the Reds in the Kearns/Lopez trade.

Useless trivia: Between their move to Washington and today, the Nats' have had no less than five names off the 2002 Baseball Prospectus Top 40 Prospects who were not at that time part of their organization:

Nick Johnson (4)
Marlon Byrd (9)
Austin Kearns (13)
Juan Rivera (22)
Alex Escobar (33)

And from 2003:
Marlon Byrd (14)
Brendan Harris (18)
John Patterson (26)
Juan Rivera (36)

They've also added Ryan Wagner (16) from the 2004 list now. I'm expecting them to make a play for Clint Nageotte (2003-35; 2004-37) any day now.
