New ZiPS Build Forthcoming

Just an update on the next build.  I should have it out this weekend sometime.  The new build will contain 25 man rosters and depth charts with playing time and additional projections for non-roster invitees that did not previously have projections.  Harry Pavlidis was a huge help here, providing me with 25-man rosters, which I modified when need be and made playing time assignments.

Through Cincinnati, the new projections so far are Iker Franco, Doug Clark, Luis Montanez, Dusty Brown, Alberto Castillo, Jeff Bailey, Luis Jimenez, Chad Spann, Jake Fox, Chris Walker, Cole Armstrong, Donny Lucy, Gustavo Molina, Kenny Perez, Kenny Kelly, Dan Conway, Ryan Hanigan, Paul Janish, Fredy Deza, Cory Doyne, Chris Waters, John Webb, Corwin Malone, Adam Russell, Wes Whisler, Jason Kershner, and Tom Shearn.  Obviously, there will be more.  Also, projections for Sammy Sosa (225/306/398) and Brian Lawrence (10-14, 5.02) who should have had projections in the first place.

Could you add Brian Barton, Hyang-Nam Choi and Jon Meloan to the next build? These are great, thanks.

Dan, how come you do this? I was going to thank you again, but I'm curious why- I think it'd be an interesting piece to hear why many of the best researchers on baseball do what they do, not affiliated to any team, for instance.

Keeps me off the streets.

I apologize for intruding in this discussion, and appreciate your patience, but if somebody else needs to be kept off the street, the Hastings League is looking for new owners. We're a Diamond Mind league with some interesting financial and GM rules for player retention. If you're interested email me at

"Keeps me off the streets."

I'll hope one of the '08 hopefuls proposes "mandator ZIPS-building" as an anti-crime initiative.

"The other Jose Reyes is now also with the Mets."

For the duration of his tenure in the major leagues, he will be known as "The Evil Jose Reyes." Just so we're clear.

Hopefully, you'll also fix the schedules. I notice that there are many instances when teams play twice a day, against different teams!

any idea when the latest greatest update on ZIP is going to be available?

Thanks for all your work Dan.

Screw politeness- I demand to know when the free comprehensive statistical work I'm entitled to is forthcoming! Some of us have lives to ignore and marriages to destroy!

Awesomely hilarious.

Like there is anyone left on this site who hasn't done this already.

Dan, just wondering. My draft is on March 24th. Should I wait for your next build to finalize my rankings, or will they be out soon? Don't mean to push...just wondering.

I was really looking forward to seeing how you address depth charts and PT.

I have seen just about EVERY sites depth charts, and for the most part, they leave alot to be desired. One exception.....The Sporting News fantasy source updates on Depth Charts are the most current and accurate I have seen.

Maybe this isn't what you mean, SWiz, but the ZiPS projections never change the projected ABs for players, even if they are "projected" to be on the bench or in AAA most of the year.

You could, if you wanted, run a bunch of simulated seasons in DMB and use those as your PT estimates. I did that last year, and it was somewhat helpful.

Did this ever come out? I can't seem to find it. The most recent disk I can find is this one. Will there be a final preseason disk?
   18. Dan Szymborski Posted: March 19, 2007 at 06:29 PM (#2314180)
Yes. As some might be aware, I've been busy moving my mom 500 miles, which has proven to be a royal pain in the ass.
   19. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: March 19, 2007 at 06:32 PM (#2314182)
Ah, I was not aware. Good luck with the move and I look forward to the final ZIPS!
   20. HowardMegdal Posted: March 23, 2007 at 02:23 AM (#2316407)
Dan, I can only hope and assume that you are doing this with her consent.
   21. GotowarMissAgnes Posted: March 23, 2007 at 02:26 AM (#2316410)
500 miles closer or further away?

250 out, and then 250 back.

Any clue as to when this may be completed? I will offer my help if needed...
   24. 100 Years is Nothing Posted: April 21, 2007 at 03:30 PM (#2341385)
I, for one, am still looking forward to the final zips....

I can only assume the hold up is trying to find a better statistical model for Oliver Perez.
