Orioles - Signed Millar
Baltimore Orioles - Signed 1B Kevin Millar to 1-year contract worth $2.1 million; signed P Franklyn Gracesqui to a 1-year contract.
Millar can also make an amazing $2.5 million in additional incentive clauses; hopefully, these are of the “$1 million if the Orioles win the World Series or Millar wins the MVP” variety instead of the playing time ones.
What can you say? The Orioles are exactly the type of team who should be finding year 2000 versions of Kevin Millar instead of year 2006 versions. But, given that the Orioles probably have the least imaginative front office/ownership of any team in baseball, we know that wasn’t going to happen. You probably could have gotten Val Pasucci back for 3 years at that price. And before someone shouts Pirates or Royals, Dave Littlefield is imaginative, but dumb, and the Royals pickup of a backup/stopgap 2B in Esteban German (before the Grudz signing) in the Rule 5 draft was a ton more imaginative than anything the Orioles have done in years.
You know a signing’s bad when the team doesn’t even mention the player’s playing abilities and the player in question even announces that he’s “not a very good player.” Kevin Millar has scads of veteran playoffy experience, super-important in the battle for 4th with the Devil Rays. One of these years, perhaps even 2006, the Devil Rays will accidentally not screw over enough of their young talent and pass the O’s.
And to think people in Baltimore are confused as to why Tejada is so pissed-off.

1. WillYoung Posted: January 13, 2006 at 07:19 PM (#1819819)I know you're mostly joking with this line, but the whole Curt Schilling ordeal illustrated that individual players cannot have bonus clauses in for team performance per the CBA.
Minnesota Twins - Signed Darrell May
I've seen him pitch before and i dont remember him too well but hes a another big lefty with the stuff to strike guys out but not enough control.
I think the Marlins were relly hoping hed get his act together and be part of their pen
Why? He's not going to pitch in the majors.

Oh i know, i'm well aware. I meant it strictly for curiosity
GtwMA,
Not really. It would just be a matter of booting out DuqFailagan's 'no talent intangible veterans™' and putting Tejada's 'no talent intangible veterans™' in. Dan's right. The O's need to be looking for "year 2000 versions of Kevin Millar instead of year 2006 versions." Before that, someone needs to teleport the warehouse, Pete the Greek and the (amazin' lack of) braintrust to Ix. Secondly, the O's need someone outside the mainstream to run the show. A person not wedded to crappy veterans and lousy prospects.
I'm not sanguine on any of that actually happening.

You, me and Dan for GM! Agnes Teviszymborski can handle this problem.

I just saw that. I didn't think this team could get more depressing than the end of last year, but they sure are trying.
They'll need a pretty large dose of magic fairy dust to turn a guy who can't even post an .800 OPS in AAA at age 25 into Ortiz, who was able to post an .827 in the majors at age 22. Young deserves the shot and the Orioles are stupid for not letting have it. But Young isn't Ortiz.
Yes, but Young could swallow both Ortiz and David Wells, and still have room for Manny.
I think if I were GM, I'd sign Young, Ortiz, Pickering, Fielder and see a real test of defense versus offense.
You'd have to factor in how much it would cost to get another team plane since youd couldnt fit em all on the same plane without crashing it
Garces?
Another question would be where would you get your lineup to play besides 1st base and DH? Because this is how it would seem:
C - ???
1b - Ortiz
Backup 1b - Pickering
Backup Backup 1b - Fielder
Backup Backup Backup 1b - Young
2b - ???
3b - ???
SS - ???
etc etc
No, it doesn't. ;-)
