Padres - Acquired Scott Hairston
San Diego Padres - Acquired OF Scott Hairston from the Arizona Diamondbacks for P Leo Rosales
Need-for-need. The Padres have a solid bullpen and a weakness organizationally in the outfield while the Diamondbacks can use the extra arm and Hairston was one of the weaker outfield prospects, though I think he’ll be alright despite a disappointing season as a part-timer.

1. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: July 30, 2007 at 04:39 PM (#2461525).313/.375/.565 in AAA at age 24
his career minor league numbers are .322/.401/.571
he also played better at age 24 in the MLB .248/.293/.442 than he has in 2007.
I suspect that Levski is right Hairston is the type of guy who has to play every day and he struggles as a part-timer/platooner/ pinch hitter.
We tend to think that some guys are decent subs but can't start, but some guys are the opposite
Juan Rivera is/was like that. Crap as a part-timer, a useful regular.
They need someone to stick with them, but when you are an unproven player it's the rare manager who will stick with you.
LOL. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as I watched him hit those two bombs. Another yesterday had me chuckling and just shaking my head.
I am delighted for the guy and only hope he gets a chance to play every day for the Pads. But it doesn't change the fact that I still don't think his bat will play very well in LF.
Of course, he could always bulk up a bit and develop into a real masher. I just don't think that's the way to bet. I think his value diminishes as soon as he is no longer making the MLB minimum.
From July 28, 2007 through July 5th, 2009, Hairston as a Padres...(Before trade to Oakland)
673 PA's, 610 AB .270/.330/.520 133 OPS+ 35 HR, 80 RBI, 84 Runs, 11 SB, 2 CS, and just 6 GIDP
He played surprsingly good defense too, and BB-Ref WAR during that time was 5.1, Fangraphs WAR 5.4. So both systems in agreement that was a great great deal for SD.
But he has been a replacement level player since being traded to Oakland in mid 2009 and then going back to SD last year.
From July 6 2009 through end of last year:
584 PA's, 528 AB .222/.281/.366 76 OPS+ 17 HR, 71 RBI, 58 Runs , 9 SB, 3 Cs, 8 GIDP
Fangraphs 0.2 WAR, BB-Ref, -1.2 WAR
He's going into age 31 season.
