Padres - DLed Loretta

San Diego Padres - Placed 2B
Mark Loretta
on the 15-day DL; recalled P Brian Falkenborg.

Loretta tore out his thumb and should be out 2-3 months.  Any consolation
that Padre fans feel from Loretta losing all his power this year is
unfortunately wiped out by the fact that
Geoff Blum
and Damian
Jackson
will be sharing the position until August. Josh Barfield isn’t
an option; he’s not hitting at all this year   I’d personally just say the
hell with it and give Bobby Scales a shot, but 1st place teams like to go
with the “safe” option even if it’s a bad one.

Retrosheet and the Padres' media guide list Falkenborg's middle name as Thomas, making him (as far as I know) the only major leaguer with the initials BTF. I'd be up for adopting the dude as one of our own.

For some reason, BB-Ref omits Falkenborg's middle name. Might be the only error on the whole site.

Damn. Mark Loretta is one of my favourite players.

Free Junior Spivey?

Roberts
Giles
Klesko
Nevin
Hernandez
Greene
Burroughs
Blum/Jackson
Pitcher

Time to push the rest of the lineup forward instead fill the 2-hole with a rally-killer. Although I'd be okay with slotting Greene there once he finds his stroke again.

...instead of filling...

Nice English this morning. D'oh!

Okay, this is getting stupid. I've lost five guys to injury in the past 10 days.

Guys on Baseball tonight the other day said the Phillies called the Padres not too long after hearing about Loretta's injury.

What about Josh Barfield (Triple A Portland)?

And my Fantasy team takes another hit. Vlad, Loretta, John Thomson, Bobby Crosby. Thomson and Loretta got injured in the same series. Argh

Damn. And I was about to hop onto the Padres bandwagon. This sucks.

Or is it "banwagon"?

Jackson and Blum have a combined 81 OPS+ for their careers. This could get ugly.

Two to three months is a pretty speedy recovery for a guy with no thumb.

Yet another cautionary tale on why sliding into first base is the stupidest thing you can do in sports. It's amazing players still do it.

What about J.J Furmaniak?

My first thought, too, Robert. In Loretta's defense, I later learned that he was trying to avoid the tag on a 3-1 putout. Which is defensible, and less wussy than giving the pitcher a forearm chop.

What about J.J Furmaniak?

If the Padres were really interested in giving Furmaniak a shot, they never would've signed Blum in the first place.

Gee, that Gautreau-for-Corey-Smith deal looks grrrreat now, doesn't it? The Goat is hitting 283/329/545 at AAA Buffalo.

Wonder of Bochy would deal with D'Angelo Jimenez again.

Probably not.

The Phillies are obvious; it also seems to me the Padres and Cubs might be trade-compatible. Walker hit .216 in the rehab at Iowa and I heard whispers he might not be ready, but he is back. Seems unlikely the Padres would give up Linebrink, Otsuka or Hammonds for him, though. Still, if I were Hendry I would least want to talk to Towers.

Junior Spivey ruined his season last year by sliding into first too. It would be kind of funny if the Padres traded for him, just for that reason.
