Padres - Signed Bellhorn

San Diego Padres - Signed 2B Mark Bellhorn to a 1-year contract worth $800,000.

He won’t replace Mark Loretta very well and Petco’s going to sap his power and BA to the point at which he’s really just a backup player.  The Padres will give lip service to giving Bellhorn the starting job out of spring training, but I think Josh Barfield’s still going to end up at second in the end.

Does Petco really depress BA that much? Not that Bellhorn hits for much average anyway, but every average seems really low in the Zips, even though some guys (Loretta, Giles, even Burroughs) have hit for some really decent averages there

I'm glad I can root for him again

I still would've liked to see the Cardinals pick him up. He's better than their other options.

I hope he has a decent year. He's a good man. And a fascinating combination of unusual strengths and fatal weaknesses

Agreed. Maybe he's one of those every other year sort of guy. If so, he'll rebound this year.

Brock Hanke called that iambic player development.

I hope those guys don't exist because Kyle Farnsworth would suck.

I think he really is.

Bellhorn rules! I hope he gets the starting job and deserves it!

Yes, Bret Saberhagen comes to mind - I think Bellhorn is one of them.
