Phillies - Acquired Snelling

Philadelphia Phillies - Acquired OF Chris Snelling from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations.

The Phillies have been quite passive at attempting to bring Aaron Rowand back for 2008, so it seems very likely that Shane Victorino will play center.  Snelling/Werth gives the Phillies an adequate platoon situation in right field, leaving the Phillies only needng to get a rightfielder for the other 500 plate appearances when Werth and Snelling are on the DL.  ZiPS has no more idea of what Snelling is capable of at this point than I do.  He was a top prospect for very good reasons and was available on the waiver-wire for equally good reasons; teams never actually get to witness the former.

Well I'm clearly behind the times. I thought he was on the Nats.

You're a few teams behind! He made it to Tampa Bay by way of Oakland.

if chris snelling is the new michael bourn, and brad lidge is the payoff, then I think gillick made a couple of nifty moves.

I first knew Snelling from the rueful wailing at USSMariner. Then saw him in a Nats uniform. then lost track of him. Wasn't he traded for Ryan Langerhans during the season?

I fully expected to see a burnt toast or some other humorous pictures when I clicked on Dan's post.

Gillick's done a nice job of getting scrap-heapy guys. Hopefully Snelling can give the Phils something in the Greg Dobbs/Jayson Werth vein for 2008.

Baseball is overflowing with cash and Kyle Lohse and Carlos Silva are the best pitching bets on the free agent market to give long-term deals to. In this market, I have to save the big guns.

I was waiting for a ZIPS projection of all zeros myself.

In Snelling's case, I figure it should be a picture of a torn ACL. Whatever that looks like. Sounds grotesque, but I wouldn't expect that to be beneath Dan to post.

I wouldn't do that to Snelling - it's easier to poke fun at a guy who's had a long career and is done than a guy who keeps getting injured before he can even get one going. The first time I ever saw him play live was the game before he tore his ACL, so I have a soft spot for the guy.

Besides, I plan on blowing my injury snark wad with the Chicago Cubs Guide to Medical Diagnosis that I'm working on.
