Transaction Oracle— A Timely Look at Transactions as They Happen

Rangers - Acquired Shelton
Texas Rangers - Acquired 1B Chris Shelton from the Detroit Tigers for CF Freddy Guzman
The Rangers do something smart here - Shelton’s unlikely to develop into a solidly above-average 1B, but he should be somewhere near average and the Rangers have little quality at 1B/DH. Once the move of Guillen to first was a reality, there wasn’t much use for Shelton on the team and the Tigers pick up a young player, albeit one who’s more likely to be a reserve outfielder than an impact player. Not as sexy as the other trade the Tigers made, but it’s still useful (analysis upcoming on that one - I’ve been out of town and away from the ZiPS SuperComputer)

1. Honkie Kong Posted: December 07, 2007 at 04:33 AM (#2637642)Teagarden probably won't see the majors this year, especially if the Rangers don't trade Laird.
As for the OF, it is a mess, and a weak hitting mess at that. Cat could play first, with Shelton hitting against LHP. But that would mean Nelson Cruz would probably be the starter in a corner OF spot. He has lots of talent, but that is not translating into anything useful for the Rangers right now. Might as well go with a Cat/Cruz platoon in LF, and keep Shelton at 1B.
It looks like has a little more than 2 years service time, so 3 or 4 years.
Agreed. Now Free Justin Huber.
Dan, I'm surprised that the ZiPS SuperComputer can't just send the ZiPS-Plane to get you and automatically bring you back to the ZiPS-Cave. Or, failing that, ZiPS-Mite the rascally sidekick could run the numbers for you.

Because I offer the projections for free, I cannot afford a ZiPSCave or a ZiPSPlane. I do have a ZiPSMazda, but it looks quite similar to my regular Mazda.
It's worth noting that ZiPS is actually supposed to be ZiPs, but I made a typo years ago and I decided to stick with it.
The Regular Mazda is pretty pimped out.
Hopefully you aren't leasing, according to a guy I saw walking along the road today holding a sign that said thus, you should never lease a Mazda.
A huge air-brushed portrait of Toscanini.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
Ok, so what is the acronym "ZiPs" stand for.
First, I thought SPS, but it needed a vowel to be able to say. So it became SIPS, but that sounds like a juice box, so it becamse ZIPS. I also wanted it to rhyme with DIPS since I think that other than Voros's system, it was the first attempt to model $H for pitchers.
I'm sure if you guys use your imagination, you can figure out why I wanted it to be ZiPs. Free hint: I'm a Gen-Xer.
Casey at least can play 1B. Shelton's a born DH.
Lost in the shuffle here is that Shelton hasn't hit for nearly two years (since a hot first month of 2006) and his strikeout rate has ballooned upward in that time period. Whatever he was doing in 2005 seems to have gone by the boards.

Except that Botts appears to be a better RHB than LHB, and Shelton bats right.

Dan, I had some of these bad boys, too.
As great as that ZIPS commercial is, <A HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd4C8_FMdjA">Alfonso Ribeiro's Breakin' and Poppin'</A? is still the best commercial in television history.
