Reds - Acquired Castro

Cincinnati Reds - Acquired IF Juan Castro from the Minnesota Twins for OF Brandon Roberts.

Since starting the season with a 17-8 April, the Reds have gone 20-21.  Some might attribute it to the fact that the offense’s OPS dropped 100 points from April to May or that the bullpen has been relying heavily on some rather poor pitchers, especially Rick White.  Most people, however, probably wouldn’t decide that the problem was that the team was no longer carrying a bad middle infielder.  The Reds, like the Twins, can pretend Castro is a great defensive player, but if wishes were horses, beggars would ride.  Well, I guess they’d wish for a car now or something.  Maybe a hovercraft.  I could totally go for one of those.

Brandon Roberts isn’t considered a prospect; he’s last year’s 7th-rounder for the Reds and is getting his ascot handed to him for Sarasota.  Getting rid of Jason Bartlett’s competition is a good move for Terry Ryan and makes it much harder for Gardenhire to blacklist Bartlett next time he doesn’t smash a clubhouse toilet after striking out.

If the Cinci Enquirer is right, this is another "non-move" move by the Reds. They expect Ray Olmedo to be sent down to clear the roster spot.

Now, if Narron gives starts to Castro over (insert name of every other infielder here), <u>then</u> there's a problem.

Getting anything back for a rapidly-slowing utility infielder who can't hit is a good trade. Roberts might not be much, but from what I read, if he could take a little better path to fly balls and develop a little bit of power, he might be an okay guy to have on your bench. Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds a lot like Lew Ford.

Twins org chart: Speedy CF without power

MLB - Lew Ford
AAA - Jason Tyner
AA - Denard Span
High A -
Low A - Tarrence Patterson

As you can see, the Twins were just addressing an organizational need. Deacon Burns has way too much power to fit the profile.

if wishes were horses

I don't see Buck Bokai's name anywhere.

Reds - Acquired Castro

Hasn't Castro been a Red since about 1959?
