Rockies - Signed Kaz

Colorado Rockies - Signed 2B Kaz Matsui to a minor-league contract.

Last time Matsui joined the Colorado Rockies, he was only a year away from tricking Ed Wade into giving him $16 million.  However, if Slow Eddie possesses the same unique GM talents that Steve Phillips has that non-GMs don’t have, such as reading and talking on the phone, he may not be tricked a second time.

Not much of a risk for the Rockies as the team’s infield depth at Colorado Springs isn’t really all that great.  At second, Eric Young Jr’s either been in the majors or out with a fractured tibia and organizational player Warren Schaeffer has been filling in at 2nd (normally a .560 OPS in the California league doesn’t earn you a two-level jump) so they can really use the organizational depth.  When double-checking if there was anyone I had forgotten about on the Sky Sox, I did come across one horror, Paul Lo Duca apparently playing 2 games at second and another couple at third.  While Paulie Cashews did occasionally fill in at 3rd a long time ago, if your emergency infielder is an old washed-up catcher, you either be filming a reality TV show or at least trying to get blackmail photos returned that involve something to do with your anus and household objects.

Now, the strangest Matsui bit is perhaps a bit from Google that I was alerted to (I have a script that gives me a number of new daily results from a bunch of Google searches, one of those daily searches being “Dan Szymborski” because of the fact that I’m moderately self-abosrbed):

If we were to ask Dan Szymborski from Baseball Think Factory about minor league numbers, he’d probably think I was asking about Cole Garner and what kind of major league numbers we should expect from him (given playing time, etc), and after park effects, he’d say “well, I’d anticipate a AAA player getting a reduction of roughly 18-20% of his production from AAA to the majors”. I’d say “Thanks, Dan! Wanna go grab a beer?” and he’d say “Nah, I’m busy being a much better baseball writer than you, sorry!” and I’d say “shucks” and he’d say “Nah I’m kidding. Not about the baseball writer part, that’s totally real. But I’m down for the beer” and I’d think “….well ok I do like beer on occasion. I sure hope he likes hot wings…” and then I’d text my buddy and say “DUDE I’M TOTALLY GETTING A BEER WITH DAN SZYMBORSKI” and he’d text back and be like “who?” and I’d text back and say “nm I’ll tell you later” and then Dan Szymborski would be like “dude, the bartender is trying to take our order” and I’d feel all sheepish.

So if what Dan tells me is correct, I should probably just put down the keyboard and go back to mucking up the Rockpile with a variety of annoying .gif’s. But seeing how he’s not here, we’ll just take the numbers he gave us and run with them.

Unfortunately, that appears to be anonymous, so I’m missing out on beer, for the record 2nd consecutive day.

All-in-all, a reasonable depth signing for the Rockies and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Matsui up if he hits at all in the next few weeks.

You know you've hit the big time when someone involves you fan-fiction.

But in this case, I think he was making fun of you.

It was me.

I gave Sports Argument Stadium a sneak peek of the first half of my 3000-word blahblah about the Rockies' 2B situation as we were on the topic of Kaz Matsui. Hence the google result

Not to divert traffic, but you can read the whole thing here now that it's published on Purple Row

I dunno, that part in all caps about TOTALLY GETTING A BEER WITH DAN SZYMBORSKI strikes me as genuine excitement at getting to drink a beer with DAN SZYMBORSKI!

Now that Jim Tracy finally seems to accept that trying a 38-yr old Melvin Mora at 2nd isn't a great idea, their actual backup backup second baseman is Jonathan Herrera. They just purchased his contract from Colorado Springs to fill in while EY2 heals and while Dexter Fowler tries Chris Iannetta's time-out booth.

Rockies fans being the somewhat impatient and inexperienced lot we are seem to be excited about the prospects of this 25 yr old who's hit .284 / .358 / .351 in almost 900 PA's at the Springs. That Clint Barmes has put up a .260-something OBP since last year's all-star break probably has something to do with that.

So yeah, Kaz can't really hurt much.

An obvious question: how many beers does it take Dan before even he misarranges a consonant in Szymborski?
