Rockies - Acquired Torrealba

Colorado Rockies - Acquired C Yorvit Torrealba from the Seattle Mariners for future considerations.

I think J.D. Closser is a better player than he showed with the Rockies, but they’ve pretty much given up on him as a starter since they’ve fallen in love with Danny Ardoin for no particular reason. I’d personally go into the spring with Closser still the starter, but if that’s not an option, better Yorvit the Torrealba than Ardoin.

I love Yorvit Torrealba as a catcher. I have for years - I think he has a chance to be the best catcher in the NL next year. He's a good catch and throw guy with more than just some pop in his bat. I expect he will get 300 at bats next year and be a really nice fantasy player for any league that allows daily transactions.

The Mariners received Marcos Carvajal. A good trade for the M's.

And I agree, can Towers. What a bad trade the Loretta move was.

I wouldn't call that particularly close, using two more people at a position; that's a 40% increase, for one thing.

BTW, I should credit Dan Szymborski for spelling "Torrealba" properly (maybe it has something to do with growing up with a last name like "Szymborski"--an advanced stage of sympathy). Over on U.S.S. Mariner, so many folks were spelling it "Torreabla" that someone suggested they think of him as the love child of Joe Torre and Jessica Alba. It sort of worked; mostly, it just got him dubbed "JoeJessica," and only a handful of people even tried his actual last name after that.

By my count, this is the sixth former Giants catcher acquired by the Rockies, seventh if you count Matt Nokes. (Decker, Manwaring, Servais, Mayne, Estalella, Torrealba) In most cases, the player has to make a stop with another organization before getting to Denver, except for the exciting 1999 offseason, when the Rockies signed both Servais AND Mayne. Look for Mike Matheny and Trey Lunsford to don the purple pinstripes by 2008.

I like Matt Nokes, but he only had 11 at-bats for Colorado. But you're right, he deserves to be counted, and along with Reed, Nokes makes eight. Dan O'Dowd, Benito is still out there!
