Royals - Signed Bale, Dotel

Kansas City Royals - Signed P John Bale to a 2-year contract; signed P Octavio Dotel to a 1-year contract.

I’m going to give the Royals a lot of credit here.  With more and more “Ken Phelps All-Stars” going to Japan, there should be an increasing market for bringing some of them back once they demonstrate the ability to play in a slightly higher than AAA league with the pressure of playing in a foreign culture.  A guy like John Bale can be a pretty impressive bargain in a market that thinks that Jamie Walker is worth $4 million a year.  Bale’s making half that ($2 million a year if reports are correct).  Dotel’s a little risky in that he costs $5 million, but it’s hard to forget what a great reliever Dotel was back with the Astros.  I rather take a risky flier on excellence than a guaranteed mediocre investment.  The Royals, now that they have a GM that has a higher IQ than a crème brülée, can find their own non-horrible relievers if they bother to look - sign the upside guy.

I feel confident in saying that Royals fans would be happy if both of those projections were dead on target. If Bale pitches that well in KC, he will pitch more than 45 innings though.

I'd have liked to see an option on the Dotel contract ... maybe there is one. I'm also wondering who they were bidding against for Bale -- what would he have made staying in Japan?

Boy I kinda skipped the main point. These signings look fine, just wondering if they couldn't have been a smidgen better.

Assuming I didn't get anything wrong, his Japan salaries in today's dollars:

2004 - $377,893
2005 - $669,902
2006 - $1,030,618

Looks good to me.

I liked Bale in his brief time as a starter with the Reds and was sorry to see him shipped off to Japan. It was a bizarre choice given how desperately the Reds needed pitching. I'll be rooting for him.

The local KC sports station said the Yankees were bidding.

Signing John Bale and giving Mike McDougall a contract extension gets Oracle attention, but the Vicente Padilla signing is ignored?

Say it ain't so, Dan...

Something tells me Dan is devoting his time to cooking up something good for the Jason Marquis signing.

At least I hope so ... it would be nice if I could get some enjoyment out of it.

Glad to see Bale back - that projection is about the level I thought he could perform at in the bigs before he went overseas.
Free Michael Nakamura!

Good to see the Royals actually signing players that other teams might want. Could they possibly, finally be headed in the right direction?
