Royals - Signed Bernero and Setherton

Kansas City Royals - Signed P Adam Benero and P Seth Etherton to minor-league contracts.

Open tryout madness in Kansas City!  Neither Bernero or Etherton are any good but, in a textbook example of damning with faint praise, they’re actually better than most of the pitchers the Royals have.  I like Royal transactions as they make me feel less sad about being an Orioles fan.

I don’t think Bernero will quite hit this projection, but Etherton may very well.  Etherton makes Eric Milton seem like a groundballer (38% GB in majors for his career, 32% in minors last year) and while ideally, you don’t want to hit the ball to any of the Royals’ wretched defensive players, the one good defensive player on the team is in center and the outfield can hold more fly balls than most.

2006 ZiPS Projections
Player       W   L   G GS   IP   H   ER HR BB SO   ERA
Bernero     4   6 37 10   92   99   50 10 34 58 4.89
Etherton     7   9 25 25 139 148   72 19 39 96 4.66

I'd rather the Royals get these kind of guys than spend crazy money on a Paul Byrd or Jarrod Washburn. Both are huge upgrades over Ryan Jensen, last year's Omaha vet minor leaguer callup. Hell, both are upgrades over Jose Lima. Them, with Victor Santos, will give Omaha a pretty good rotation, and some much needed depth when the Royals rotation gets their annual rash of mid-summer injuries.

Washburn, especially, is going to be awful next year.

Both of these guys were once Tiger prospects. 'Nuff said.
