Transaction Update (7/15)
White Sox - Signed OF Jeremy Reed to a minor-league contract.
Reed could actually be a pretty serviceable 5th outfielder, but he’s kind of got a little baggage. Not the “knifed a judge” kind, but it’s hard to get the fungible-guy-roles when everyone remembers the year you hit .400 for Birmingham and the hype that went along with it. Call me crazy, but I still think he could hit 330/360 and be a useful role player
Blue Jays - DFAed P Ron Uviedo.
This is a bit like the Doug Davis pickup by the Jays many moons ago, another transaction that I liked but the team suddenly gave up on after a week or two. It would be one thing if they need the roster spot for Escobar and Uviedo was the absolute worst player on the roster, but I’d much rather have Uviedo than Jo-Jo Reyes. I have an ESPN piece up about the bigger, Escobar move.
Padres - Claimed OF Quinton Berry off waivers from the Phillies.
At this point, Ken Berry’s just as likely to be useful in the majors as Quinton is. Berry’s kind of the poor man’s Esix Snead, who was about 7 or 8 “poor man’s” down the line from anyone actually good.
