White Sox - Signed Teahen
White Sox - Signed 3B Mark Teahen to a 3-year, $14 million contract.
It’s always nice when you can look up one of your stars and buy out a free agency year without too much pain. It’s not quite as nice when you’re locking up Mark Teahen.
As of yet, Teahen has yet to demonstrate that he can handle defensively a position at which he can hit well enough to really be an asset. And unfortunately, that position isn’t even 3B - he’d pretty much have to be a decent defensive 2B to be worth committing to for 3 years.
Some people might reply that “He’s versatile! He can play LF/RF/1B/3B!” There are a lot of players that can do that. We call them role players and they shouldn’t be paid nearly $5 million a year.

1. Dewey, Steven Wright Wannabe and Soupuss Posted: December 09, 2009 at 06:18 PM (#3408001)I mean, it's not like this is a crippling signing or anything, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, particularly considering that third base is the ONLY position that the White Sox have minor-league depth.
Some White Sox bloggers are speculating that this means that Brent Morel is trade bait. I don't know about that, but it certainly clears the way for a deal.
He can play LF/RF/1B/3B!" There are a lot of players that can do that.
Now, now. The group that can play 3B and outhit Geoff Blum but not hit well enough to start is fairly small -- as in teams don't seem real comfy with a Hinske or Blalock or Branyan at 3B anymore.
Of course I'm not sure anybody should be comfy with Teahen at 3B anymore which is one of the reason it's an odd move. The other is why you'd be worried about being able to replace Teahen in 2 years. But of all the owners I'd like to see wasting money rather than putting it in their pockets, Reinsdorf is top of the list.
