Yanks - Signed Pettitte

New York Yankees - Signed P Andy Pettitte to a 1-year, $16 million contract.

Given what really marginal starting pitchers are getting this offseason, this isn’t a bad risk at all.  And that’s before considering the fun of bringing back one of “your guys” for a farewell run.  Pettitte will be a solidly above-average pitcher, not a great one, so anyone hoping that he’ll also come back to 1996/1997 form will probably be disappointed.  I hope the Orioles do something similar with Mussina at the end of Moose’s career (if it’s not too late already).

I'd much rather have this Projection on the hill for Game 3 of the ALDS than TAFKA Big Unit, Pavano, Igawa, Lidle, or Jaret Wright. I'm happy to have Pettitte back. Of course he's overrated, but he's also better than most of the alternatives.

That's a pretty optimistic pessimistic projection.

How does his wife feel about this?

"How does his wife feel about this?"

She thinks the Yanks got a good deal, signing him to only one year, but is skeptical about how Andy will readjust to the AL and a worse defence. Obviously, she hasn't seen ZIPs.

Is there any definitive word on whether there's a player option or not? If not, lord what a deal. If so, it's still pretty darn good.

Player option, with an oral agreement not to invoke the option in case of injury.

#4 is my favorite post I have seen around here in a while. Kudos.

Wait, I thought all extra-contract deals were completely illegal! And what the #### kind of player option is it if you can't invoke it in case of "injury?"

I agree - it can't be binding. Given Andy's talk of retirement, I think this is just as much insurance as the Yankees could possibly get that he'll decline his guaranteed zillions if he is going to retire instead of coming back for 2008.

He can, and he might. But he told them he wouldn't, and they believed him.

Isn't Pettite a devout Christian? They wouldn't break their word for the sake of money.
