...if insanity inducing. I hope it will be a long long time before I have to deal with something like that again.

I'm drained from that - I might skip the game tomorrow and play golf instead - totally drained.

Don't try and enjoy this!

Only the 4th time since 1900 a team has given up 17 runs and won, according to ESPN.

Who was kicking field goals for the Sox?

(Sorry - just getting that joke out of the way now).
   5. Epitome Posted: August 13, 2008 at 09:57 AM (#2900873)
Only the Rangers could score 17 runs and still lose. The worst defense in the American league and the worst pitching in baseball, an injury crippled lineup but they can still mash.

Not true. Here are the games they listed:

'08 Rangers Red Sox 19-17
'08 Marlins Rockies 18-17
'69 Phillies Reds 19-17
'22 Phillies Cubs 26-23

They forgot at least the 23-22 Phils-Cubs game of may 17, 1979. I'm sure there are more.

An AL team maybe?
   8. Misirlou is bad, he's nationwide Posted: August 13, 2008 at 12:28 PM (#2900904)
Look at ESPN's list. 3 NL only games.
   9. Chris Dial Posted: August 13, 2008 at 12:30 PM (#2900907)
Well, that's dumb. But *is it* the 4th AL game?
   10. plim Posted: August 13, 2008 at 01:13 PM (#2900931)
no mention of papi's 6 first-inning RBIs as a record (or near the record). i wonder what the record is for rbi in the first inning. i'd have to imagine that it'd be near 8, as i can't imagine a guy getting 3 ab, let alone multiple rbi in each of those at bat (3 grand slams in the 1st inning?!)

can pi even search for something like that?
   11. Slivers of Maranville (SdeB) Posted: August 13, 2008 at 01:35 PM (#2900944)
Well, Fernando Tatis has the record for most RBIs in a single inning, with 8 (two grand slams). That was the 3rd inning.
   12. plim Posted: August 13, 2008 at 01:59 PM (#2900974)
ok...looks like 6 rbi is close to the record, and it ties a "recent" record:

ORTIZ DRIVES IN SIX RUNS IN 1ST INNING
David Ortiz hit a pair of first-inning home runs on Tuesday night. It's been less than two years since Bobby Abreu drove in six runs in the first inning of a 12-4 Yankees win over the Devil Rays (Sept. 12, 2006), but only one other player did so over the previous 50 years. From 1956 to 2005, only Matt Stairs had six RBIs in the first inning of a game (July 5, 1996, A's vs. Angels).

didn't realize abreu just did this =P

and confirmation:
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/08/more_papi.html
Ortiz's 6 RBIs in the first inning ties an AL record and is a career high for Big Papi.
He just got a little bigger.

I'm probably over-reading between the lines, but it seemed like Ortiz' enthusiastic celebration around the dugout after Youk's 8th inning homer (which happened after an IBB to Papi) was an expression of \"#### yeah, they will still be burnt if they pitch around me, even w/o manny!"
   14. Dave Cyprian Posted: August 13, 2008 at 03:12 PM (#2901076)
Nate (#13) I agree completely. Ortiz looked so excited, like, "Someone else on this team besides me can hit clutch monster bombs! Woohoo!" Thats fairly consistent behavior for the person who had heart palpitations when it became obvious that the Sox would miss the post-season in '06.

Think! Think ! Charlie Zink!
Between their bats yours ball must slink!
Fastball, cutter, kitchen sink-
Far from such off'rings you must shrink,
If its more than coffee you're to drink,
If its more than coffee you're to drink.

IIRC, Damon got 3 hits in the 1st inning of the 25 run Sox game in June 2003...

You RC.

This is the game in a nutshell

That's correct. I believe Damon actually had 3/4 of the cycle by the end of the first inning, and then didn't manage to get despite coming up like 6 more times.

The irony of that 25 run game is that that game was a win over the World Series champion Florida Marlins.

The BOS-FLA series in 2003 had to have been one of the worst pitched series in all of creation.

The Red Sox win 25-8

The Red Sox lose 10-9 after giving up 4 runs in both the 8th and 9th.

The Red Sox win 11-7, nothing particularly notable.

Total Runs:

Red Sox: 45
Marlins: 25

Adjusted OPS+
Bradley-TEX 176
Rodriguez-NYY 162
Youkilis-BOS 147
Quentin-CHW 145
Drew-BOS 144

Who knew Youkilis had this in him?
   22. Golfing Great Mitch Cumstein Posted: August 15, 2008 at 03:19 PM (#2904379)
What's "adjusted OPS+"? What other adjustment is made after park and league factors?
   23. Miko Supports Shane's Spam Habit Posted: August 16, 2008 at 01:45 AM (#2905018)
Uh oh, Masarotti to the Globe.
   24. Golfing Great Mitch Cumstein Posted: August 16, 2008 at 03:22 AM (#2905138)
Then "adjusted OPS+" is "OPS+"?
