Baseball Has Been Played!

The defending World Champions (that’s the Boston Red Sox if you forgot) have started playing baseball again.  Apparently the top prospects have made some noise already.  Bobby Dalbec crushed a homer the other day and Michael Chavis has cranked a couple of dingers of his own.  As both players are heavily dependent on their power to make an impact it’s a nice little sign in these crucial* early spring games.

* - not crucial

Maybe the biggest story so far is the Ryan Brasier situation. Brasier is back in Boston dealing with a toe injury which Alex Cora jokingly said to NESN was progressing fine and if not they’d just cut it off.  Jokes aside it’s early enough not to be too concerned about his availability for Opening Day but with the early start to the season (March 28) another 7-10 days without being back on a mound might get us to a point where the Sox may not have him right from the jump.

There is no indication at this point that this is anything that will be a long term injury so it’s not something that should have Dave Dombrowski scouring the market yet.  Given the expected importance of Brasier to the bullpen the Sox need to be cognizant of his situation.  If he’s going to miss the start of the year but be back by Patriot’s Day, no big whoop, if it’s something more that’s problematic.

Somewhat related but independent nonetheless I’m starting to think despite protestations to the contrary that a return of Craig Kimbrel on a one year deal isn’t off the table.  Clearly the closer isn’t getting offers even remotely close to what he wants (and I wouldn’t go 5-6 years for him).  It could be beneficial to him to find a one year deal somewhere and go back at it next winter without the albatross of draft pick compensation looming over him.

Obviously the Sox wouldn’t be his only option in such a scenario but a club likely to be a playoff team where he knows the management and would presumably be comfortable with his expected role and usage might appeal to him in that scenario.  It’s still a remote possibility of course but I don’t think it’s a zero chance.

In other off field news I finally found the answer to a question I had wondered about.  Apparently a SoSH poster (not BTF post SoSH though) reached out to NESN over the winter to find out about a sequel to Faith Rewarded, Champions Again and Band of Bearded Brothers.  According to the poster NESN said that MLB, which owns the rights to the post-season footage, was asking an unreasonable amount of money for those rights so they felt they couldn’t make the video.  That’s a disappointment because those movies were far superior to the bland World Series videos that MLB produces.

On the plus side I head to Fort Myers on March 8th.  If there are any players you are interested in reports on, let me know as I’ll be hitting the minor league camps as well as four games at JetBlue Park.

I demand reports on JBJ. I like the offseason reports I've heard so far.

JBJ is definitely a guy I'm excited to see. He homered yesterday.

Just listened to reply all which had a tweet from an "MCofA". Is that our MCofA? He's famous!

I don't know what "reply all" is (a podcast?) but our MCoA is semi-famous. He's doing a LOT of writing about statistics in soccer with an emphasis from what I've seen on "expected goals" which seems to be the gateway drug to sabermetrics in soccer. He's turned up at 538 and The Athletic and was a regular at the Tottenham FC blog "Cartilage Free Captain." That work is what pulled him away from Replacement Level Red Sox.

Yes, it's a podcast, and it was him. I don't think it increased his famousness at all but he appears to be appropriately proud of himself. I just like when my worlds collide (unlike George Costanza).

I’m happy for him. When we got RLRS going he was also getting his soccer stuff going and the 2014 World Cup was a real springboard for him. He’s hustled to make it work and he’s a good guy.

Nothing like spending some time with my two great loves: @Chirlane and the @RedSox. Weren't even favorites to win the division, and now they’re the reigning World Champions!

(yes, that really is the verified Twitter account of the Mayor of New York City)

Watched a bit of yesterday's game. Darwinzon Hernandez is definitely worth paying attention too. I'd heard about the live arm but he is just a moose on the mound, I didn't realize how big he is. The other thing I liked seeing is CJ Chatham drive a ball. He's a guy entering a year where I think he has a chance to change his fortunes for the better. Fully healthy after a full season, I'd like to see him step up.

Born in Manhattan, but grew up in Cambridge in the prime Yaz years. He is unapologetically a Red Sox fan, and when he ran for mayor he said that he can't change that part of him and isn't inclined to hide it, either.

Quite a few Red Sox fans in West Palm Beach today. Nationals going with Max Scherzer.

Steven Wright won't be playing baseball however. 80 game suspension for a growth hormone releasing drug according to Bob Nightengale. That's not great.

Attended the game today. A couple of quick notes;

- Devers definitely looks leaner and was moving pretty well motoring around the bases on his triple. He had a bit of a tough day in the field but encouraginginly I think it looked worse than it was because he showed exceptional range to his left.

- EdRod looked good. Don’t know if it was the pitch clock or just the lower stakes of spring training, I’ve been fooled by the latter before, but his tempo was considerably better.

- Barnes and Thornburg were terrible. Barnes looked like a guy just struggling to locate. Thornburg just looked helpless, there really wasn’t anything positive about his outing.

- CJ Chatham is a tall drink of water. He looks out of place in a middle infield position but seemed to move pretty well and in limited chances seemed to have pretty good hands.

That sounds like 1st-half Barnes last year. Every outing was either lights out or lit up, no in-betweens; 2 Ks and a pop-up or 2 BB and a HR.
