1. CraigK Posted: June 10, 2005 at 12:40 AM (#1394049)I'm really excited to see this guy get a chance to show what he can do. Unless Millar/Olerude totally tanks or gets injured, how is he gonna get his oppurtunity? Plus, there's that Larry the Lobster anti-Petagine barrier. But, if he continues to simply crush AAA pitching like he has been, will the Big Club be have no choice but to bring him up, regardless of what the organization's 1B situation is? Will Roberto's glimmering batting line overwhelm them, and force thair hand? I dunno.
I've yet to hear anything on WEEI or 1510 The Zone about this matter, either from a host or a caller, or see anything in the print media.. Maybe I should call...
Thanks.
Thanks.
It is from a TO that Dan wrote at the time of the signing, I believe. You can read it here.
Also, in our fantasy league, Darren originally called his team, "Petagine in a Bottle." Which was funny.
..and his career major league numbers are .261/.342/.478, in around 2300 PAs. Which do you think is more indicative of his likely production in the majors?
I don't think it's realistic to expect Petagine to do much better than Daubach has done in his career.

Also, I don't think Daubach can bat .350 over a full season at AAA. It's likely that his numbers will go down considerably.
Let's assume for the sake of discussion that Petagine is capable of putting up an OPS of 1100 in AAA over the course of as season. Do you really believe that the change in levels would effect Petagine by over 300 in OPS? I find it hard to believe that this would be the case especially since Petagine has a high walk rate and a reasonable strikeout rate. In addition, Petagine has never had a meaningful sample of major league at bats to confirm or deny his ability to hit at this level.
I think NPB is a very high level of baseball, played to win, with all the pressure of a major league. It's pretty hard for me to believe that Petagine's peak seasons in NPB weren't equivalent to star/superstar production in MLB. That's the assumption I'm working from. He was awesome, and I take it quite seriously.
He had a down year in 2004, but he seems to be healthy this year, and his translated AAA production is comparable to his regressed, translated Japanese stats.
I think Petagine's had a much better career than Brian Daubach, even though he hasn't played in the North American major leagues.
When did Papi pass Manny?
And does anyone have a link to his NPB stats so I can check out what y'all are talking about. Thanks.
I am pretty comfortable saying Ortiz is better than Manny right now. I think Manny will improve off of where he is now but I also think he has entered into a very real decline phase of his career.

Of course, Petagine is older and plays 1B (where Matsui's 0.829 career OPS would be below average). But besides that, they're the same.
Millar's current OPS is 722. If he were hitting at his career averages, no one would be calling for Petagine's freedom.
