Happy Pitchers and Molinas* Day!!!

* - That’s not my joke but I don’t remember who first coined it so let’s just assume I’m incredibly funny.

Today is the official early report day for pitchers and catchers at JetBlue Park.  For those of you who enjoyed shoveling snow this morning like I did you’ll be pleased to know the report from my mother in SW Florida is that it’s “chilly” (i.e. 66 degrees) and raining so they are miserable too.  A few random thoughts as people who were a hell of a lot warmer when they woke up arrive at work.

- The Red Sox have hired Mario Impemba to be Joe Castiglione’s running mate on WEEI this year.  Impemba had been the voice of the Tigers and has a relationship with Dave Dombrowski that is strong enough that DD wrote the forward for Impemba’s book.  Impemba somewhat famously was let go by the Tigers after a brouhaha (or was it a donnybrook? Maybe a fracas) with partner Rod Allen.  Joe Castiglione bounced back from falling out of his chair after game four of the ALCS last year so the man can take a shot.

- Adam Jones, one year, $5 million what say you?  The Sox don’t REALLY need a backup outfielder but freeing up Brock Holt from outfield duties might be kind of helpful and while Jones isn’t what he was he can still fake it in all three outfield positions well enough to be a 200 plate appearance guy.  The only problem with him is that he’s not a lefty masher.  He actually has reverse splits so he’s not the obvious fit that a guy like Chris Young was.  As a side note I initially called Chris Young “Craig” because I am old and stupid.

- The more I read the more I think the Sox are going with only two catchers.  I don’t mind that in general but I feel like the guy who is least likely to go away is Sandy Leon and he is the guy I think should go away.  Christian Vazquez and Blake Swihart are not superstars but I think both are more likely than Leon to get better.  The only reason to keep Leon is to put a lot of credence into his catcher ERA and in fairness that’s been an ongoing trend long enough as not to be dismissed out of hand.  However, I am skeptical as to how “true talent” that will be moving forward.  I would expect that the ability to frame pitches and such would also decline as a player got older and less agile.

- Nine days until baseball games (Northeastern on the 22nd) and 23 days until I arrive on the scene!  Baseball!!!!

I could be sold on Adam Jones. I think there's a real possibility, the way Steven Wright is talking about how he has to be much more cautious about his knee, that Dustin Pedroia spends most of the 2019 season on the DL again for complications with his knee. That means some close-to-full-time duty at 2B for Nunez, Lin, or Holt, and I've listed them in increasing order of preference. I don't hate Nunez, but if he were full time I'm pretty sure I would. Positioning the roster in a way that frees Holt up to take charge at 2B is good (not great), but is IMO a likely necessity. What would hold me back on Jones would be whether he's substantial upside on Rusney Castillo. In any season before this one that would be a laughable consideration, but I think the gap between them has narrowed considerably.

All that aside I'm not sure Adam Jones can be sold on Boston.

Yeah, Castillo would be a nice fit in that role though the Sox have made it pretty clear they aren't willing to invest the $18 million or so that putting him on the 40 man roster would cost.

Given the glut of 2B on the market this winter, I'm a bit surprised the Sox didn't pick up a decent one. Lowrie and LeMahieu would be in a better spot in Boston than whatever utility roles they are filling in New York. At this point, the usable options are down to Marwin, Harrison, and Forsythe. Harrison wouldn't be a bad fit, actually.

Free agents looking to play full time probably aren't interested in a roster spot of "enjoy the bench until Pedroia is done for the year, assuming he is".

That's the difficult thing about the human side of it. I used to say this about Lowrie the first go-round, and Buchholz: as long as they're on the roster you're planning to play them, so you can't hire a replacement despite the fact you can't depend on their health making a replacement unnecessary.

I'm with you on the catchers. Seems like we'll probably deal one of Swihart or Vazquez, but those are the two I want to keep. Maybe Leon will do better with a lighter load?

As for Jones, I can't imagine wanting to spend $5 million to upgrade the 4th-5th OF slot on this team. Freeing up Holt sounds good in theory except that Holt is an excellent OF and he doesn't need to be free. We already have Nunez as a utility IF as well. If they're going to throw around $5 million, I hope it's on reliever.

I think they keep Vazquez and one of the other guys. But whichever of those 2 that they keep, I predict they'll be looking to replace him by midseason.

Pedroia, when asked if his left knee is 100%:
"Do I get my knee 100 percent?" he replied. "Well, (expletive), it ain't even my knee. It's somebody else's, bro. My right knee is 100 percent."

My parents are in Fort Myers watching the first official full workout. My father says that Henry, Dombrowski, Cora and Sale all gathered to watch Darwinzon Hernandez’ throwing session. As soon as Hernandez finished they all walked away.

I am intrigued and would like to subscribe to their newsletter.

My father is trying to arrange a sit down with JDM, I think it’s unlikely but there is an “in” that makes the chances non-zero.

Kinda-news;

- Eduardo Rodriguez has a new slider that WEEI says has everyone including Pedro "buzzing."

- Ryan Brasier has gone back to Boston to have an infected pinky toe examined. First, is it possible to have a wimpier sounding injury? Second, is this really something the folks at Lee County Memorial Hospital are ill equipped to handle?

Maybe that's where it got infected.

If it helps him stay on the mound for more than 5 innings I love it.

Not sure if this is worth submitting to the main page, but Eck will call 85 games this year, 30 in a 3-man booth with Remy. I think he's the best option they've tried recently by far (including Remy). Maybe his shtick would get old, but give me someone who clearly loves the game and that's a great head start.

I prefer Remy and have concerns about the shtick but yeah he’s the best option they have. Certainly better than Lyons or Merloni getting in there.

It's worth noting that the name "Steve Lyons" does not appear in that article at all. Dare we hope that he'll be confined to the studio if he's still on the payroll at all?

Carlos Pena and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are also mentioned as calling games. I seem to remember Salty being kind of stiff his first go-round in the booth, but maybe they see something in him. After hijacking the WEEI thread about it being all older white guys, I'm glad to see that NESN isn't going that route.

Nick Cafardo passed away in Fort Myers today. Only 62.

Who is that in the booth with Dave today?
