Heading for the Fort

In five days I’ll be headed to Florida for a bit of fun in the sun.  This will include four days at Fenway South strolling around eyeballing various players.  Here are five players I’m eager to gawk at;

Blake Swihart - Swihart is off to a fast start this spring and the reports are very positive.  The key question for Swihart is not so much the bat but where the glove can play.  If he can pass as a reasonable facsimile of an MLB IF/OF I think he can win a regular job.  I think the Sox WANT him to be the guy and I’m a big fan of the bat so I want him to be the guy too.

J.D. Martinez - I just want to be able to see him in a Sox uniform and all this nonsense to be over with.

Tyler Thornburg - An under discussed aspect of this team is the impact a healthy and productive Thornburg can have.  As good as the bullpen was last year it had an element of unreliability to it.  Guys like Matt Barnes and Joe Kelly were good in 2017 but it seemed like just when one of them proved to be “the guy” ahead of Craig Kimbrel he would slump.  Thornburg and a full season of the electric Carson Smith can make this bullpen less heralded but every bit a match for the Yankees.

Bobby Dalbec - Dalbec had a strong debut campaign in 2016 then struggled a bit in 2017.  The strikeouts are a concern but there is serious MLB power there and he is a guy who could conceivably break out this year.  This is his age 23 season so it should be a year for him to make strides if he has a meaningful upside.

Minor Leaguers Who Work With Coaches - One of the things I’ve always liked about Deven Marrero is the way he was always chatting with coaches during his lower minors days.  Manuel Margot is another one who seemed to be really receptive to input.  It’s a dumb little thing but it’s a fun thing to see and a bit of insight into a player that I enjoy.

Are there players you are interested in? Let me know and I’ll see what I can do.  I’ll have my camera and plenty of free time!

(And if you are jealous…you should be).

I'm hoping Swihart breaks out. I live in NM, so I have a soft spot for him, plus I think he has been horribly mishandled by the RS. After his 2015 performance the starting catcher job should have been his to lose, and then he got sidelined for basically two years by a freak injury. He's paid his dues.

Agreed. I think the Sox panicked after a couple of mistakes early in 2016 and really messed him up. Sounds like I’ll be seeing JD based on the reports tonight.

I am jealous...I've been to some spring training in Arizona, but I've always wanted to go to Florida. It would have easy for me to go in the 80's when I was in my 20's. It probably still had an old school feel back then, but I squandered that time on beer, cigarettes and girls. Maybe when I retire.

This is not squandered time.

Yeah it's definitely different. I went in 1990 to Winter Haven, 1997 and then every year since 2000 (my parents have a place down there). Up through about 2006 you could pretty much walk up and get a ticket no problem and there was good access. The arrival of Daisuke and a second world title changed things a bit. The new place is SO much nicer than City of Palms. The minor league complex was about 3 miles down a road that was not exactly what the Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce would use to advertise their little city. Having everything in one place is really neat. While the players are a bit less accessible for autographs and such since everything is in one complex you can watch the minor leaguers work out and then watch the big leaguers as well which you couldn't do at City of Palms.

Not that it means anything, but I initially read the last word of your title as "Fart", and was wondering why you were being so negative.

The smell on that road outside City of Palms Park did have a flatulent aroma.

Hey, it's the first sign of spring - Jose being unrealistically enthusiastic about Swihart.

Three Therapoints™ awarded for the most accurate post of the year to date. (Not to discount the odor in Fort Myers...)

This is the year Swihart puts it together guys!

Maybe the bumper stickers that say I HEART SWIHART are on deep discount at Mike Greenwell's Bat-A-Ball & Family Fun Park.

FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKK. Pomeranz has forearm tightness. Going to proceed to wet myself for the next few days.

I just got back from a long weekend on Sanibel Island and flew in and out of Ft. Myers. I did not notice any particular odor.

Don't panic yet. Pomeranz has a history of these little things and Nick Cafardo tweeted that Pomeranz said his level of concern is "very low."

OK, I’m getting to Naples a couple days later than planned thanks to this storm. Sunday night instead of tonight which means I miss the Yankee game tomorrow. My mother is pretty happy about this since she gets to use my ticket.

Bummer dude. Hopefully you didn't have to spend hours at logan before getting the bad news.

Six hours, fortunately I got out on Saturday and I’m now in Naples. My first game will be Wednesday. I’ll get there to check out the minor leaguers before getting to the game so if there is anyone you are interested in let me know.

I felt bad for the coupkethat flew from Cape Town to Dubai to Boston and then had to wait 26 hours for their flight home to fort Myers.

Does anyone remember watching Swihart actually catch in games? It was really painful. He seemed to miss and stab at balls a lot behind the plate. His bat looks decent for a catcher, but he's got to actually be able to catch. Let's hope he puts it all together this spring.

There is rain in the forecast so it’s a bit touch and go but JD Martinez is scheduled to be in the lineup against the Twins tomorrow,
