So That Happened

OK, everyone who expected the Hanley Ramirez DFA move raise your hand.  Now everyone raising your hand please put it down because you are a lying dog and I will cut you with the new machete I bought.  Obviously while this is a big shock I think it’s worth considering what it means for the rest of the roster before we go much further.

Jackie Bradley Jr. We’re cool with you - One potential fall back for a club without a lot of outfield options was an alignment with Hanley as the every day DH, JDM moving to left, Andrew Benintendi to center and JBJ either making a trip down I-95 or simply cooling his heels on the bench.  In theory the Sox still have the ability to take steps in this direction.  Eduardo Nunez could be a regular DH while Blake Swihart and Brock Holt could either DH or play left field.  However I think this reflects a willingness to ride JBJ a bit longer.  Obviously at some point if JBJ hasn’t turned it around (.286/.333/.429 in his last four games!) then the Sox will have to do something either from within or without.  But for now I think JBJ’s situation is a bit more secure.

Blake Swihart, see those green bananas? Go ahead an buy them - A guy who almost certainly had to be a bit wary everything he got a text alert on his phone the last few days has to be breathing a bit easier this afternoon.  Swihart’s performance certainly hasn’t earned him much but the Sox are sending a pretty clear message that they trust him.  With two (2) career appearances at first base he is currently the second most experienced first base option the Sox have after Mitch Moreland and Brock Holt.  I have to believe he’s spending much of this lovely Friday afternoon breaking in his first baseman’s mitt and getting comfortable over there.  The Sox do face a lefty tomorrow night in Sean Newcomb though in less than a full season he has a reverse split so it is not likely something the Sox are too concerned about at the moment.

All you big guys in Pawtucket, keep the car gassed up - First base options in Pawtucket include Sam Travis (RHB), Jantzen Witte* (RHB), Jordan Norelationbetts (RHB) and Mike Olt (RHB).  Notice a trend?  Travis is having a poor year as is Witte while Betts is doing well and Olt is raking (.894 OPS).  If the Sox need to make an internal move they may simply look for the guy who is hot.  Olt is hitting .281/.395/.563 over the last 14 days so he’s probably the first guy up.  I don’t think anything is likely but I assume (hope?) that the Sox are at least planning for a world where Mitchy Two Bags isn’t getting it done or suffers an injury.

* Witte actually traded places with Norelationbetts and is at Portland so he’s probably not a real option at the moment.

It has become a bit of a slogan around baseball that you spend until Memorial Day figuring out what you are.  The Sox have clearly made some decisions on this front and have decided who they want to ride with and who they don’t.  It’s hard to see this as a bad decision, Hanley hadn’t been hitting for a month and change so his loss shouldn’t hurt.  But it is a jarring move and one that has some repercussions.

Is there any reason whatever to believe that Pedroia is a more useful player than Hanley Ramirez at this stage? He's three months older, has an OPS+ 10 points less and has doubtless declined as much from his peak at 2B as Hanley has from his peak at SS. I KNOW Pedroia has more WaR, but when you look at the actual figures that looks like a defect in the WaR formula more than anything else.

Just asking for a friend... I bet Hanley is damn useful to whichever team picks up up for the minimum. Certainly the Sox offense today without him looks pretty anemic.

Ya see Karl, there's this whole other side of the game that we call "defense" and much like Hanley you apparently have not heard of it...

DH types who can manage a ~90 OPS+ are pretty readily available. Most of them would be much less expensive than $22M next year.
