Two ways in which Dave O'Brien has been ruined for me.

1. EVERYONE on-air calling him "Obie" seems ridiculously forced, like they want to convey that he's part of the family so badly that they've contractually agreed to invoke the nickname all the time. I don't recall anyone referring to him that way before this year, and then suddenly everyone on NESN calls him that.

2. My son pointed out something I can't unhear. It seems like O'Brien learns one fact about a player before a game, then mentions that fact every time the player appears. OK, Dave, we heard you the first time. This is baseball on TV; you don't have to fill every silence with something, and if you have nothing new to say then don't say anything.

He's not irretrievably ruined. But his positives can't overcome those two points, at least not yet.

Eck has done some games, and he is still Eck.

Anyone on the west coast offer up an opinion on how Orsillo is faring out there?

Is it me, or is Remy more obsessed with opposite-field hitting this year than usual?

I haven't formed a strong opinion on Dave O'Brien yet, but I thought it was a little annoying how much importance he was placing on hitting for the cycle when Mookie had a chance to do it in Houston.

It has been a regular talking point. The Sox seem to be having a lot of success on that front. It seems like there are players who get shifted or at least played heavily to pull that are taking advantage of it, Mookie and JBJ especially.

Been busy living at a local film festival for the last week, but... The same guy at NESN has to be behind both "no more Orsillo" and "lots more Lyons", right?

I'm going to be starting an autobiographical tv series based on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, with David Ortiz in the Josh role. Last night's episode was titled "Papi hit a home run for my birthday!"

A belated happy birthday, Scott!

I thought O'Brien and Lyons handled the Manfred interview well last night. They lucked out that the Sox had a bit of an inning and they were able to dig into stuff.

Yeah, the Manfred interview was pretty good.

Here's FanGraphs notes on their crowd sourced ranking of the MLB television broadcast crews;

11. Boston Red Sox
Main Broadcasters: Dave O’Brien and Jerry Remy
Ratings (Charisma/Analysis/Overall): 3.6, 3.3, 3.5

Three Reader Comments
• “Dave O’Brien is a decent replacement for Don Orsillo, but Jerry Remy continues to be an ‘enigmer.'”
• “Like the beverage Moxie, Remy has a distinct regional flavor whose taste is best described as ‘acquired.'”
• “When [Dennis Eckersley] is in the booth, it’s prime time. He’s an example of what Hawk Harrelson could be if he wasn’t an angry old man yelling at a cloud.”

Respondents appear, in almost every case, to acknowledge Dave O’Brien’s capacities as a play-by-play commentator while simultaneously noting that they’d still probably prefer Don Orsillo, who was dispatched from the booth last year. The ratings here would appear to reflect that: when this same exercise was conducted four years ago, the Red Sox finished fifth among all broadcast teams. Now, 11th.

And that goes double if Steve Lyons is involved.

I would just like to reiterate #10. God this is awful to listen to. I can't understand what the bigwigs at NESN have been thinking over the past year. Orsillo to O'Brien is a downgrade but fine, I guess to each his own. But Steve Lyons sucks beyond belief, three man booths don't work and just generally there is no reason not to have Remy in there unless he doesn't want to be. Eck is OK but the more I listen to him the less I enjoy him. I don't think it's quite fair to call what he does schtick because I think it is sincere but it's just painful.

Oh I find O'Brien just aggravating. His false adulation routine is just so tiresome like when Eck talked about wishing he had something something when he pitched and O'Brien so predictably fawning away by going something like "Oh, then you might have been good." Blah, blah, blah. He comes from the Mike Tirico school of broadcasting for sure, just fake stupid bonhomie.

One of his weirdest moments of the season came when Remy was talking about first career major league hits and O'Brien asked him who he gave his first ball to. He didn't simply ask, "What happened to your first ball?" he had to put some presumptive twist on it. Why even presume Remy would give away an item of such significance to him? Remy sputtered like he was shocked the question was framed that way before answering that he had it. Just a dumb thing like that grates me about O'Brien.
