Sox Therapy: The Perfect Schedule - Games 121-130

At least in one universe the Sox are a professional baseball team playing well.  They run their record to 130-0.  A bunch of personal memories here.

Game 121 - Sox 24 at Indians 5 - 1986 - I remember watching this one on my parents’ 10” black and white TV.  Against highly touted southpaw Greg Swindell making his MLB debut (and I remembered that off the top of my head) the Sox went bananas.  Spike Owen scored six runs, Tony Armas drove in six (Owen batted after Armas in the order) and on a ...

Sox Therapy: The Perfect Schedule - Games 111-120

The Sox stay hot running their record to 120-0 with ten great victories here.  This stretch features some huge run totals and a near no-hitter.

Game 111 - Sox 5 at Tigers 4 - 1980 - Making his first start since May of 2019 Mark Fidrych pitched 8 innings allowing 11 hits and 5 runs.  Fred Lynn and Tony Perez had three hits apiece and Jim Dwyer hit a solo home run off the Bird in the 8th to make a winner of BIll Campbell.
Game 112 - Rangers 7 at Sox 8 - 2005 - The Sox jumped out early and led ...

Sox Therapy: What Have We Learned

Truthfully? Not much.  It’s seven games.

But despite that I think we can make some too early judgments before what I imagine will be a fairly ugly weekend in the Bronx.  There is a pretty sizable gulf between the two clubs that is exacerbated by the Yankees being the kind of big slugging team that the Sox should be expecting to struggle with.  I kind of want to see Josh Osich pitch against Aaron Judge this weekend just so we can learn how far a baseball can travel.  Anyway, the Sox are 3-4 on ...

Sox Therapy: Baseball (Finally) Begins

It’s a bit later than we expected in circumstances we never could have imagined but the Boston Red Sox 2020 season will finally begin on Friday as the Sox face the Orioles.  The good news for the Sox is that the playoffs will feature 16 teams rather than ten.  The bad news is that pitching staff which does not look especially impressive.  There are so many changes this year and on the field the biggest one is probably the 30 man roster rather than the usual 25 man roster.  Let’s take a short ...

Gonfalon Cubs: 60 Second Season Preview

I had a dream last night that the Cubs won the World Series the year, and no one cared.  After they had won, I was trying to decide whether or not I should post something here about them winning even though I didn’t pay that much attention the season or playoffs.

Anyhow, the season starts tomorrow and there’s really no way to know what could happen on the field - or off the field and how that’ll affect the actual games.  I know that’s always true, but it feels more true this year.  60 games is ...

Sox Therapy: The Perfect Schedule - Games 101-110

The Sox keep it going running their record to 110-0.  While the real thing will kick off on Friday the Perfect Schedule version of the Sox just keep on keepin’ on.  The toughest call here was game 104 which could have been David Ortiz’ walk off against Fauxsto Carmona.  I went with a more personal memory though.

Game 101 - Sox 8 at Yankees 6 - 2012 There wasn’t a lot to cheer about in 2012 but The Pedro Ciriaco Game was one thing. The Sox blew a 6-1 lead but Ciriaco smoked a go ahead ...

The Philadelphia Athletics beat the Cubs 4 games to 1 in the World Series.

Sox Therapy: The Perfect Schedule - Games 91-100

The Sox hit triple digits here at they run their record to 100-0!  This series includes arguably the most iconic regular season game in club history which is a shame in some way because that punted Nomar’s 3 homer birthday party against Tampa off the list.

Game 91 - 2014 - Other Sox 4 at Sox 5 - It’s weird the things you remember.  White Sox starter Chris Sale shut down the Good Sox for 7 innings.  In the 8th down 4-0 rookie Mookie Betts singled to shortstop but was hustling all the way ...
