2007 AL OPD (Offense Plus Defense)

What follows is a list of “total player run contribution” for the entire 2007 AL.  For defense, it has Defensive Runs Saved at each position a player played, and his total.  For offense, it has his Plate Appearances, his Outs Made, and his Extrapolated Runs Above Average at his primary position, park adjusted.  These are not adjusted to “162 games”, but for the player’s actual playing time.

Please note that Manny Ramirez’ defense is bad, it isn’t this bad.  Manny’s defense, while bad, is not that bad.  He *probably* is closer to about -20 runs.  This simply requires more research.  Nonetheless, I don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  Thanks to Kiko for the kick in the pants to make this info googleable.  Thanks to AROM, Szym, SG in Atl, Dale Stephenson and Ron Johnson for tremendous support on this methodology, whether for five years or twelve years.

If Mark Ellis was only on defense, he'd still be 20th by this measure.

That's some awesome defense.

When you sit between Kenny Lofton and Shannon Stewart in a value chart, you are soooo not an All-Star

Excellent point, but you would be about 19 runs better than Manny Ramirez.

I try to comfort myself from that thought by staring at the 2007 flag for a few minutes. It works like a charm.

I would recommend doing that more often.

wow--Seattle's left fielder is at -22.8 and their rightfielder is -20.6

that has to be some sort of record for the same outfield

(or some REALLY bizarre park effect)

(even Ichiro comes in at -6.5--can't these guys catch anything?)
   8. Blackadder Posted: June 21, 2008 at 07:55 PM (#2828509)
I don't think it's a park factor for the M's; didn't Ichiro always score well in right?

Kotchman's D is worth at much at 1B as Sizemore's is in center? Wow. And Kotchman played only 137 games last year.

As for Manny's D not being as bad as the numbers make it, has anyone ever tried building up a "composite" defensive performance for the visiting LFs in Fenway? Would that be very challenging to do? Or can we look at Manny outside of Fenway? I know that people have tried to address this, but I forget how.

Anyway, if you bump Manny up 10 runs, does that mean that the rest of the Boston D should come down by that much? Or that the rest of the AL LFs need to be adjusted up, too?

if you add up all Seattle's defensive ummm.. "contributions", you get a whopping -56.9

Tampa isn't much better at -49.8

Detroit is at +54.3

I should add that -49.6 of Seattle's total comes from the outfield

Yes, if you bump Manny by 10 runs *all* the other LFs split 10 runs. So it isn't really going to affect anyone else that much.

The one thing that needs to be done to make this an absolutely bangup metric is to be able to compare the value of a run above average at 1B to the run above average at SS. While each one is a run above average from their counterparts at their respective positions, it doesn't really inform us as to the relative defensive value of a guy who can play SS at league average to a guy who has to play 1B. I think that's a pretty big gap that still needs to be worked on.

Unless I missed where that was explained, in which case, skip to the end.

Nice work!

(also, if i read the first part right, the batting runs are also based upon primary position? in that case this is great for examining all third basemen, not so great at examining MIs and DHs comparative value on a team)

It's nice to know that Joey Gathright was more valuable last season than Brandon Inge. Some people actually seem to think his defense makes him into a star regardless of whether or not he passes the Mendoza line at the plate.

Cust is only -0.6 on D? Wow do I wish that were true.

And the A's need to resign Ellis. No one else values him correctly, so it shouldn't be ridiculous.

it's been done before and consensus is that manny is average to slightly below average compared to other LFs in fenway, and below average on the road. neither cut supported that manny is the historically bad stonehenge that every defensive metric places on him.

of course, every defensive metric seems to think that you should be catching a ball 36 feet above your head off the green monster for an out, but we can all thank stats zones for that =)

bah...we need the edit button again. i misspoke, he comes up as below average both on the road and at home, but still not historically bad. from mgl:

33. mgl Posted: October 22, 2007 at 11:28 PM (#2589867)
Am I understanding this correctly? Manny has been responsible for -114 park adjusted runs on defence over the past three years, of which -20 are on the road and -94 are at home? Doesn't that suggest that there's something bizarre going on with the park factors?

A little off. The home and road numbers are per 150 and the -20 is total for 179 games. The correct h/r breakdown is:

-20 on road and -45 at home, assuming 179 games at home also (I don't know if this is correct).

Whether that "suggests" something "wrong" on the park factors, I really have no idea. Obviously both home and road are going to fluctuate so that the chance they are almost exactly the same is small.

I don't do a very good job of doing the park factors at Fenway, or more accurately speaking, the way I do the park factors is not tremendously applicable to Fenway, although probably not THAT bad.

Doesn't really matter. All evidence points to him being one of the worst fielders in baseball. Whether that is 11 or 30 runs bad, I don't really know (and that is a big difference, 11 or 30). If someone put a gun to my head, I would probably say -15 bad.

Either way, it is extremely useful information and to characterize advanced defensive metrics as in #31 above is just plain ignorant. I assume the poster has no clue how these metrics are developed and instituted, and if he does, he is apparently not intellectually capable of separating the weaknesses of ANY methodology that deals with sample data from its value.

#32, thanks.

and...

When I said that Manny's road numbers are just as bad as his (park adjusted) home numbers, I misspoke. His road numbers are around half as bad as his park adjusted home ones. I guess it has been proven that I am not infallible. Therefore everything I have said in the past and will say in the future has to be revised, ignored, discarded, given an asterisk, etc. Congratulations to #35. You are now a better man than I. I am going to have to completely reassess my sense of self.

Really, what is the point in arguing this? That is all the data and explanations I can come up with. I don't have any definitive conclusions other than what I said in my last post, that Manny is most likely a -15 or so fielder in LF. To be a "true" -20 or -30, you pretty much have to be a statue and there has to be a compelling reason why you are even playing the OF (like Bonds this year in LF or Griffey the last few years in the OF)
   23. Chris Dial Posted: June 23, 2008 at 10:17 PM (#2830233)
like Bonds this year in LF
Bonds has never been remotely that bad.

How is it that Rios was worth 12 runs above average while Markakis was worth only 6? They're both AL East right fielders in fairly neutral parks, and their basic stats are almost identical. The only significant difference was that Markakis grounded into more DPs. Are 12 or so extra DPs really worth 6 runs?

I must say I was shocked at how exact those two guys lines are. Basically, 4 triples are worth more than 6 walks and 12 GIDPs.

What about the fact that their VORPs are almost identical?

ALso, how are DPs accounted for? Does xra factor in the number of runners on 1st?

I don't know what Dial's metric accounts for, but Prospectus keeps track of double play opportunities. They had Markakis with 5.5 more GIDP than average given his opportunities, while Rios had 5.3 fewer GIDP than average. Nick GIDP'd in 17.1% of his DP opportunities, while Alex was at 9.2%.

What about it? It's a different formula, and I can't tell you how it is calculated and what the weights of those calculations are.
ALso, how are DPs accounted for? Does xra factor in the number of runners on 1st?
NO, it assumes an average rate (the run value would incorporate the frequency of the league, but not the individual).
