Jim, can we talk about these ads?

Jim, I have no problem, at all, with ads on primer.  I understand that this is a lot of work and costs money to host.  I’m all for ads.  What’s been bothering me a bit lately is the “Male gamers only” ads that appear to have a naked woman on them.  (When you look closer she’s wearing a flesh tone bikini or something, but at first glance she looks naked).  Do you have any ability to filter those out?  They can make coming to the forums awkward.

Jim, this issue has been raised by a number of Loungers over the last few weeks in casual conversation. (Includng the note that the risque nature of them seems to be getting continually worse and worse.)

I myself don’t have a problem as such (I don’t have anywhere I could be embarrassed by the ad) but if you do have any control over the ads supplied, I think it would be appreciated by many if those ads (they are for “WarTune” and direct to wartune.gamerankers.com) could be taken out of rotation.  I don’t think these particular ones get served on the mainsite, possibly just the Forums.

Thanks!

I understand. I don’t see all the ads though. Although I have filters set up, sometimes the advertisers (or ad agency) doesn’t properly categorizes ads.  It would be helpful for me if you provide a screenshot of the ad so that I can search the ad servers and reject the ad.

I don’t have a screenshot or anything else helpful but would like to say that I think these ads do appear on the mainland unless there is an even more adult version that is in the lounge and I haven’t noticed the difference. And there have been comments about them being problematic in main site threads as well.

I need to see the ads. A lot of the ads are targeted by where you live (by the IP of your computer). Because of the way the ad system works, people don’t see the same ads. I can only find an ad if I have enough info to find it.

Out of curiosity, how much money would it take to make the ads go away for a year?

I have the email. I will search for the ad tonight after I get out of work.

As for turning off the ads, a few people have asked for the option over the years. If enough people would like the option, I would think the option would have to be in the $20-$30 range for it to be workable for me yet worthwhile for the site’s members. I have the week of the 16th off. I plan on getting some site updates done. If there is enough interest in the option, I will, time permitting, work something up.

With ads turned off, the site would also load a little faster.

Jim,

Big picture: how much to get rid of the ads on the forum pages for everyone?

Posted: 06 March 2014 02:30 PM   [ Ignore ]   [ # 12 ]

I’d pay $30 a year to get rid of the ads.

On a similar note I have been having serious problems with the site for a few weeks now.  For some reason whenever I am on the site at my office it locks my internet for several minutes at a time and crashes the program a few times a day.  I am using both IE and Firefox.

I had that problem too. Until I installed adblocker, and then the problems went away.

Personally, I think the ads are hot. More importantly, they send the right type of message to my direct supervisor as they scream, “Hey, your employee is slacking, but he has the sense to slack on a website that has ARRIVED. After all, nothing says a website has made it more than ads for soft porn.”

Also there are ads that will run sound and video on them even if you have the damn box muted, I suspect that is what is causing all the browser crashing.  its quite annoying when it locks up a page and crashes my browser.  had to give up on using firefox for tis site because of that.

Yes, this site crashes my browser several times a day at work, and has for several weeks now.  I am told the site is trying to run an application (“dw.exe” or something like that, I will check the next time I get the error) and asked whether I want to allow it.  Regardless of whether I say “yes” or “no”, it crashes my browser.

Just to follow up on the above post, here are the error messages that I get.  First, I get a pop-up window that says:

“Stop running this script?

A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowly.  If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive.”

If I click “Yes”, IE just freezes and I have to manually close it through Task Manager.

If I click “No”, I get a pop-up window with the following message:

“Internet Explorer Security

A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer

This program will open outside of Protected mode.  Internet Explorer’s Protected mode helps protect your computer.  If you do not trust this website, do not open this pogram.

Name: dw20.exe
Publisher:  Microsoft Corporation”

If I click “Allow”, I get the following pop-up window:

“Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process ID=0x2ea4 (11940, Thread ID=0x3348 (13128)

Click OK to terminate the application
Click CANCEL to debug the application”

Jim, for what it’s worth, the ads are still there.  Andd now I can access BBTF at work, but I’m afraid to do so with those ads up.

Jim, I’m now being re-directed sometimes when I refresh the lounge.  I can’t tell you to where, as Chrome stops me from going there.  This happens at home and when visiting others, and only to btf -  I can’t imagine that it’s malware on my machine, as it only impacts btf (although if such a thing exists please let me know).
