Okay, so I’m in a really deep 12 team 5X5 NL only league with 23 players and 10 reserves. Therefore, there is hardly anyone worthwhile available to pick up. This is my first year playing roto.
1. Due to the fact that all of my pitchers got hurt and I had to make some trades, I now have Pete Orr as a starting outfielders. In very few leagues could this be considered a “good thing.” My choices to replace him are crappy players who at least play every day (e.g., Reggie Abercrombie, Skip Schumaker) or pinch hitters who are hot now but who knows if they will ever play again? (e.g., Gabe Gross, Cody Ross). Are any of those guys a better choice than Pete Orr?
2. I was offered Ryan Howard for Conor Jackson and Xavier Nady. I feel like I’d be “selling high” on Nady, but it might be too much for Howard. Also, without Nady, I’d need to replace Orr AND another outfielder. Thoughts?
Any chance of getting at least a crap starting outfielder thrown in with Howard? If you already have Pete Orr starting, I’m not sure selling high on Nady right now is a great idea, unless you can either cash him in with a challenge trade for another starting outfielder or you’re very confident you’ll be able to pull a trade for another outfielder. I don’t think Cody Ross is a bad pickup at all - while Freel is going to get the Griffey injury starts, Kearns getting injured is a real possibility and given the Reds’ apparent dislike of using Chris Denorfia, you have to figure Ross would get the majority of the playing time. Getting Howard is pretty tempting though - I’d really try to delay there and snag an outfielder or two in the meanwhile, if you can.
I have Derrek Lee and Coco Crisp, out. Just picked up Granderson to help me out a bit. Recently traded Freel for Trevor Hoffman, as I only had one closer (Turnbow). Just offered Marcus Giles, Kearns and Lieber for Kazmir and Ruckie Weeks. Do I know what I’m doing?
I wouldn’t take that trade unless Kearns is better than a bench player in your league.

I would move on a couple of likely call ups (such as Victor Diaz) if you or someone else already hasn’t. You have the roster space for that. Aren’t there a couple of likely arrivals to the Diamondbacks?
Has someone grabbed Dellucci?
Are rate stats or counting stats more important in your league? If rate stats are more important, by all means jump on Gross. But he’s a sell-high candidate if I ever saw one.
BTW, trading Freel is great. He’s so not likely to have consistent playing time this year, and if your league is weekly, Wale, you could get killed on that.
It was my understanding that 12-team one-league setups used to be the norm. It certainly seems to take a lot more strategy than trying to decide whether to keep a 5-time all-star who’s struggling, or drop him for a 3-time All-Star. We are only allowed one waiver claim per week, so there are league members who literally can’t get injured players out of their active lineup and onto the bench.
I’m doing well just being able to field a full 23-man roster every day—even if it does have Pete Orr in the outfield (who I put on my bench specifically because he could fit in almost everywhere).
I actually have Victor Diaz on my bench, thinking he and Nady would be fighting for the starting job, with the other the 4th outfielder. I benched him and replaced him with Orr when he got sent down. I would certainly reverse that if he came back up.
Categories are BA, R, RBI, SB and HR, so counting stats definitely count more. That is the only reason I would consider Reggie “.174” Abercrombie. Other choices are Choo Freeman, Miguel Ojeda, Matt Diaz, Gabe Gross, Chris Woodward, Brian Jordan, Cody Ross. Also, that guy Spillberg or something, just up for Colorado.
If you know who the D-Backs are considering calling up, please let me know.
Yeah. Delucci is gone, too. This being a Philadelphia area league, all of the Phillies were taken, and at too high a price! (I have none on my team, except Randy Wolf on the bench for the second half.)
Yes. All 23 play. 12 teams times (23 active players plus 10 bench players) = 396 players. The NL, at any point, has 400 players (25 man rosters of 16 teams), so it is possible to be using all but 4 players.
In practice, that doesn’t happen, because I had Roger Clemens, Lastings Milledge, Chad Billingsley, Felix Pie, and Anthony Reyes on my bench (I traded Reyes last week) instead of, say, some Rockies middle relievers. I like it because it feels more like you’re assembling a real team instead of a pseudo-All-Star team.
In a mixed league, I probably wouldn’t trade Clemens for Blanton, because you could probably get something not a lot worse than Blanton for free.
That’s what I’m think now actually. I have to confess that I can’t differentiate between Blanton, Haren, and Harden all that well.
While I was sitting on the guy’s offer, someone else snatched up Ervin Santana and John Thomson from waivers. Thomson may not be all that great (he’s started so far against San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Washington), but I was still interested.
Now, David Bush, Jason Marquis, and Scott Baker are the best choices. Am I overlooking someone?
I’m in a league in which relievers are critical. But I have one too many. Who would you release out of Duaner Sanchez, Zumaya, or Cotts? Soriano, Street, and K-Rod are going no where, and saves aren’t counted.
Johnny, keep Zumaya. He’ll keep racking up tons of Ks.
It is a weekly league, so I guess I was right to sell high on Freel.
I was counteroffered Kazmir, Miceli and Weeks. I’d give up Kearns, Turnbow and Liriano. Is it worth counteroffering Hoffman instead of Turnbow? Or should I just reject?
And finally, I have only one DL slot, and Crisp and Lee out. Should I just dump one of them? Lyle Overbay is available.
Take David Bush. Is Verlander available? Sorry to keep pimping Tigers to you, but he’ll get Ks and win his share. His peripherals, beside HRs allowed, are excellent so far.
Pitching wins don’t matter. I think I will try to trade Cotts for Buerhle, and if that fails, I will likely dump either Cotts or Todd Walker for David Bush.
Verlander (whom I call Voolander, as in Derrick) was snatched up a while ago. He was drafted, released, signed, released, and now signed. But the guy who took him won’t drop him.
I started with Mulder and say Cotts.
Now, I have K-Rod and say Cotts (whom I am most likely going to turf). I just have to get a starter that allows me say I’m better at both spots. Dropping Cotts for Bush doesn’t feel like that.
I love the title of this thread. Anyone think Ponson is the real deal this season? He’s putting up semi-decent #s and is available as a FA in my league. I’m sure his ERA will balloon at some point, but I think he might be good for some wins with that offense behind him.
I owned Blanton last year, he was two separate players. Started off okay, had a horrible stretch, then I dropped him and he rebounded quite nicely to finish the season.
It all depends who you have to give up to get Ponson. I like taking guys like that when a guy I have does on the DL. That gives me a week or more (depending on how back dated the DL stint is) to see whether or not the guy’s worth having, and then, I can just drop them if I don’t like how they were for that short time. I don’t like, however, giving up anyone for a guy like that.
I took Brandon Phillips on this theory when Helton went on the DL. I’m aggressively trying to trade him, but I’m dubious about it.
Now, I’m thinking about Baker or sitting on my hands.
So far this week, I have 14 IP with both King Felix Fernandez & Smoltz going this weekend (as well as my 5 starting relievers), and the minimum is only 20 IP. I will never win games started, IP, and pitching outs, but my rate stats should be good as well as categories like home runs allowed.
