Starting the first one at noon sharp, apparently.
   2. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:08 PM (#3910264)
I see Coco's back to hitting barehanded.
   3. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:43 PM (#3910284)
hey, Crawford's hitting streak has brought OBP UP to 290. That's amazing.
   4. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:44 PM (#3910286)
Tek!

(Varitek is like the opposite of McDonald - numbers say he's more or less done, but seems to do something useful every time I see him in a game)
   5. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:47 PM (#3910289)
Tek's numbers are really good for a backup catcher.
   6. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:49 PM (#3910291)
True enough; the catching situation has been a really nice story on both sides.
   7. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 04:57 PM (#3910296)
What was the Pedroia play in the 1st?
   8. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:00 PM (#3910298)
As good as Tek's hitting numbers are, he really does nothing about the running game at this point.
   9. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:00 PM (#3910299)
That AB from Reddick was really encouraging. Working the walk after getting down 0-2 (and just missing a long homer foul). Lefty Varitek hitting one into the deep part of the bullpen was really cool too. I just wish he could throw out anyone trying to steal...
   10. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:01 PM (#3910301)
I mean it is really great that he's bounced back at the plate as a backup, but I just don't know how much longer they can keep playing him when teams run on him like this.
   11. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:05 PM (#3910303)
The ball is carrying today - Adrian's double looked like an easy pop-up off that bat.
   12. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:12 PM (#3910305)
Pedroia wants that extra base today, and is 50/50 on taking it.
   13. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:12 PM (#3910306)
Glad Suzuki couldn't handle the throw, but that was a bad send with no outs.
   14. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:13 PM (#3910308)
(That's the play in the first, Darren - Dusty got thrown out at second trying to stretch a single when Scutaro scored)
   15. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:25 PM (#3910317)
But what happened? How did it happen that the SS was throwing him out?
   16. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:26 PM (#3910318)
His ball down the third-base line took a right-angle carom off that bit of the stands that juts out, bouncing right to the SS.
   17. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:29 PM (#3910319)
Aviles bunting with a 5 run lead? If this were Showalter managing, he'd get plunked the next time up.
   18. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:30 PM (#3910320)
And now stealing, too.
   19. Phil Coorey. Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:31 PM (#3910322)
3.30 am - why the #### am I awake - oh yeah - ###### - proper ######
   20. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:36 PM (#3910325)
I'm trying to figure out the expletive Phil wrote that got nannied. It's got to be some splendid Aussie colloquialism.
   21. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:37 PM (#3910326)
I think I know, and if I'm right, then yuck - feel better, Phil!
   22. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:38 PM (#3910328)
No, wait, wrong number of letters.
   23. Phil Coorey. Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:40 PM (#3910331)
f.u.c.k.e.d

aussie slang would be fingered which offends people for some reason
   24. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:44 PM (#3910335)
No walking people, Lester! I need this game finished close to on time, because I'll be in the bleachers for the nightcap, and the later it starts, the more likely I get very wet.

(The outdoor movie screening in Chinatown, I imagine, is just right out)
   25. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:51 PM (#3910338)
The bats are really active today.
   26. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 05:57 PM (#3910343)
The Sox have a least one run scored in every inning.

And looking at that rain, I'd better go see if all my windows are closed.
   27. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:00 PM (#3910344)
It's clear in CT right now. They are probably expecting some clearing soon.
   28. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:02 PM (#3910346)
It always gets really clear a few hours before a hurricane arrives.

It's raining pretty good here in DC but the wind is light so far.
   29. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:03 PM (#3910347)
Long inning for Breslow. He's nearly up to 30 pitches.
   30. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:06 PM (#3910349)
I pull Lester here. No point in putting him at risk.
   31. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:10 PM (#3910350)
At risk of what, getting struck by lightning?

Sure, the field conditions are deteriorating, but they don't look awful yet, and he's pitching pretty well.
   32. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:23 PM (#3910357)
NESN has just shown the same Comcast commercial four times in a row.. Sell some other advertising, guys!
   33. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:25 PM (#3910358)
OK, yeah, now you figure out which guys in the bullpen are expendable enough to risk injury.
   34. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:25 PM (#3910359)
Field does not look playable.
   35. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:27 PM (#3910362)
Tarp out.
   36. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:31 PM (#3910365)
Well, at least they got one game in.
   37. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 06:40 PM (#3910374)
Does Bean's deal obligate NESN to always use the phrase "L.L. Bean tarp"?
   38. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:01 PM (#3910386)
At risk of what, getting struck by lightning?

Sure, the field conditions are deteriorating, but they don't look awful yet, and he's pitching pretty well.

The game was not in question, Lester's skills are not in question. Any risk is too much risk at that point.
   39. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:09 PM (#3910389)
Any chance we get more baseball today or is this rain here until Tuesday now?
   40. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:11 PM (#3910391)
Looks like they're finishing this game, at least. No word on the second game.
   41. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:20 PM (#3910398)
hey, Crawford's hitting streak has brought OBP UP to 290. That's amazing.

Even more amazingly, it's already back down to .287
   42. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:23 PM (#3910401)
Seems pretty dumb to resume this game when it's a 7 run game only to get the field even more wet.
   43. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:25 PM (#3910403)
And here comes the tarp again.
   44. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:57 PM (#3910414)
Seems pretty dumb to resume this game when it's a 7 run game only to get the field even more wet.

Seems dumb period. You have another game you want to get in and you're making it possible that that game will be pushed back so you can finish this one and get everyone out of the park. How about an ounce of common sense?
   45. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 07:58 PM (#3910415)
This week in baseball used to end with a montage of great players doing their thing in slow motion. Now it's a parade of sponsors to the same music. Sigh.
   46. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 08:28 PM (#3910437)
Information about Game 2 would be appreciated, team.
   47. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 08:49 PM (#3910446)
If they can't even finish game 1, no way they get game too in. Sorry, Jay.
   48. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 08:58 PM (#3910451)
Seems likely, but there's been nuttier things go on, like the ones that started at 10pm. At this point, I don't know why you don't just make the announcement.
   49. Jay Seaver Posted: August 27, 2011 at 09:07 PM (#3910460)
Tarp's back off... And, what the hell, if they'll let me in for the finish of this one, I might as well make my way to the T. Wish me luck!
   50. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 09:44 PM (#3910483)
i I can't believe they're finishing this game.
   51. Darren Posted: August 27, 2011 at 10:05 PM (#3910500)
dumb.
   52. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 10:14 PM (#3910506)
Are they actually entertaining the thought of playing 2?
   53. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:04 PM (#3910533)
Bedard does not seem sharp at all. 87-89 MPH on the fastball, no control.

Well he was good for a few starts anyway...
   54. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:08 PM (#3910534)
I like him. He's better than I thought he'd be. (I had low expectations.)
   55. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:09 PM (#3910535)
Yeah, I'm inexplicably blacked out here (Fox has hurricane coverage, not a game), would appreciate commentary from anyone able to watch.
   56. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:11 PM (#3910536)
I hope they can somehow get this game in--assuming a win of course--to get us more games played ahead of the Yanks (who were washed out x 2 today).
   57. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:13 PM (#3910538)
It's not a Fox game, Benji.
   58. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:14 PM (#3910540)
I hope they can somehow get this game in--assuming a win of course--to get us more games played ahead of the Yanks (who were washed out x 2 today).

The Yankees have something like 34 games left to play in 31 days.
   59. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:16 PM (#3910543)
I'm trying to watch on EI, not Fox. Gamed on EI overlapping Fox Saturday games are usually blacked out.
   60. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:17 PM (#3910544)
It's raining. It will probably rain harder very soon. This game has little chance of going 4 1/2 innings.
   61. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:21 PM (#3910546)
They're usually blacked, but this game should have an exception since NESN is actually broadcasting, and it's working fine on MLB.tv. Extra Innings is ####### up if it's blacked out, because it should not be.
   62. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3910547)
Well then it's ###### up. Maybe they didn't account for the DH in time or whatever.
   63. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3910549)
You should call your cable or satellite provider and let them know they're ####### up then.
   64. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:34 PM (#3910552)
They've all gone home in advance of the hurricane.

Papi 2R HR.
   65. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:36 PM (#3910555)
Pedroia seems to be getting his groove back too.
   66. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:38 PM (#3910557)
Dan, it'll take me forever to get anyone on the line, and they'll just reference the Fox blackout.
   67. Dan Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:40 PM (#3910560)
Seems like EI has a lot of issues with improper blackouts. Just another reason MLB.tv is a better deal.
   68. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:42 PM (#3910562)
Just get 9 more outs, Erik
   69. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:43 PM (#3910564)
A solid wall of water is headed for Boston. It will be raining very soon. Look see.
   70. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:45 PM (#3910566)
8 outs.
   71. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3910567)
7 outs.
   72. ray james Posted: August 27, 2011 at 11:49 PM (#3910568)
6 outs.
   73. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:00 AM (#3910572)
5 outs.
   74. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:01 AM (#3910573)
4 outs.
   75. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:04 AM (#3910575)
3 outs. Bedard is dealin'.
   76. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:04 AM (#3910576)
3 outs. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
   77. Dan Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:05 AM (#3910577)
Wow, looking like they're actually going to get this to an official game. I didn't think they had a prayer of doing it.
   78. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:07 AM (#3910579)
They better hurry because a band of yellow is headed for Boston.
   79. Dan Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3910582)
Crawford is back to looking ####### terrible.
   80. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:26 AM (#3910589)
After the rough start, Beard is pitching quite well.
   81. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:27 AM (#3910590)
Bedard, I mean.
   82. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:27 AM (#3910592)
WTF. FINISH HIM!!
   83. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3910593)
god damnit.
   84. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3910594)
Rain delay ! Arrrghhh.
   85. Dan Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:29 AM (#3910596)
####
   86. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:40 AM (#3910601)
Haven't been watching this game until now, but at the start of the rain delay, NESN's studio guy, Tom Caron, must've said four times already that Bedard was pitching well, but REAAAALLLLY slowly.

FWIW, it looks like there might be a couple of windows in Boston to get in a little more playing - in the 11 pm hour, and in the 1 am hour.

If I were the Sox, I'd tell Papelbon to be ready to come in for the 5th inning. If the game goes to the 6th inning, then I'd have Bard come in (unless the lead expands beyond 3-0). The chances this game will go nine innings is zilcho.
   87. Dan Posted: August 28, 2011 at 12:42 AM (#3910602)
I think they will stay here all night to try and get the last inning in to make this official. Oakland doesn't have another trip east of the Mississippi River this season, and neither team has many off days to schedule a game on.
   88. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: August 28, 2011 at 01:18 AM (#3910615)
9:25 restart time - the tarp is off the field.

I think Bedard is done for the night - I'm telling you, you treat this like the 9th inning, because there is crazy rain coming in a little while, and everybody (including, quite possibly, the A's) will want to call this game as soon as they can. Bring in Paps or Bard!

If they get through the top of the 5th with a lead, then it would be in the Sox interest to make their half of each inning as long as possible - so really, it's all about getting these three outs.
   89. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 01:36 AM (#3910623)
Well, it's in the books now. Let the torrent come!
   90. Darren Posted: August 28, 2011 at 01:58 AM (#3910626)
It looks like it would be pretty fun to be there.
   91. plink Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:12 AM (#3910629)
Wow -- I had totally given up on them finishing this, just checked back in.
   92. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:14 AM (#3910630)
Aceves has been pretty awesome lately. He might grab the 7th inning guy job come playoff time.
   93. Joel W Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:21 AM (#3910633)
82-51 through 133 games would be the best record the Sox have had in my life time, and they'd need to go just 18-11 to get to 100 wins.
   94. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:21 AM (#3910634)
Aceves is looking good again tonight - three shutout innings. Bard is warming up, will probably come in for the 8th.

It's raining at a pretty good clip at Fenway. I'm on the seacoast in New Hampshire, about an hour's drive north of Fenway, and it is raining like crazy right now, wind starting to pick up. I am amazed that they have been able to get to the bottom of the 7th of the second game of the day. Assuming they hold on for the win, this will be a nice advantage for them relative to the Yankees during September's schedule. They have both tomorrow and Monday off, and will have a rested bullpen for the Yankees series.
   95. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:51 AM (#3910642)
3 more outs. Let's put this baby to bed.
   96. ray james Posted: August 28, 2011 at 02:59 AM (#3910643)
Love the twinbill sweeps.

2 up on the Yankees now.
   97. tfbg9 Posted: August 28, 2011 at 06:15 PM (#3910937)
Bivens = awesome. I mean that.
