This is Randy Williams' last appearance as a Boston Red Sox. Hope he makes it count.

How did Crawford not play that? He coulda played that, I thought.

By the way, a split I just thought of.

Crawford vs. Indians: 384/429/846
Crawford vs. everyone else: 236/271/344

Whoa, whoa, easy there with the technobabble, Mr. Wizard. ;)

Is that wishcasting? I hate seeing him in a game, because it suggests that the proverbial white flag has been waved.

Good thing we have that speedy defensive ace in LF

Crawford looked really tentative there I thought, like he didn't want to run into the wall. I can't say I blame him. Why should you run into the wall when you're already down a couple runs and almost certain to make the playoffs.

Barring injury, Williams should be the guy to go when Bedard is added to the 25-man.

Th amount you guys complain about Crawford is almost intolerable really.

Re: The Angels not catching up to the WC. They could take the lead in the AL West...then you have the Rangers fighting for that spot. I know it seems to be splitting hairs, but the Rangers still have two series left with the Sox...and if anyone was built for a good run, it would be the Rangers.

I know...the highest paid OF in the history of MLB should be above reproach when he's failed at offense, defense and base-running.
   112. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 02, 2011 at 01:59 AM (#3890802)
I'm still a Crawford fan, and I'm really rooting for him to do well. It's hard, though, not to complain about Carl Crawford in most Red Sox games. He's been terrible.

Let's hope the Tribe wins the Central, then.

Except that if the Angels take the lead in the AL West it means the Rangers will have to lose games.
   115. Joel W Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:02 AM (#3890807)
I didn't say it was beyond reproach, it's just that you guys (Dale and Dan mostly) make it sound like a character thing. Also, I've never understood why we blame players for when their play doesn't match their contract. Who wouldn't take #### tons of money? He's been crappy. Also he hasn't failed at defense and base-running. He's been average at both when we expected elite at both. He's been bad at offense when we expected above average at offense.
   116. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:05 AM (#3890808)
Losing to the Indians is particularly galling because it's obvious that Chris Perez isn't good. He has barely any more strikeouts than walks, and he's been closing all year. (Three saves in three opportunities against the Sox.)
   117. Dale Sams Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:06 AM (#3890809)
1. I haven't seen average D...though I admit I haven't seen as many games as I would need to..to make an eyeball test.

2. I'm basing base-running off his steal rate. I suppose I could dig deeper and look at 1st to third etc...

3. I haven't said anything about his character.

4. In general, it's been my experience that game-threads are the place to express your unrestrained, irrational pants-pissing.
   118. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:07 AM (#3890811)
Ugh. Not even going to see Perez. Well, g'night.

Part of the "cost" of being a highly paid pro athlete, particularly on a high-profile team, is that people know how much you make and get extra scrutiny when you perform poorly.
   120. Dan Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:08 AM (#3890815)
I don't think it's a character issue, and I like the guy too, but it's hard to ignore the fact that he's not hitting like he did in Tampa Bay, not stealing bases like he did, not playing defense like he did, and not staying on the field like he did. He's a very likable person, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to criticize him when he's a letdown on all fronts.
   121. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:09 AM (#3890816)
I think the question is, when Crawford comes around, will we all get over the bad year? I think yes.
   122. Matt Clement of Alexandria Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:13 AM (#3890820)
Also, I hate Chris Perez's stupid hair.

Also, his stupid face.
   123. Joel W Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:14 AM (#3890822)
@117 and @120, ok, I'll retract slightly, and he has been frustrating, but I do think it's been not as bad as made out to be. Baseball Reference has him as -2 fielding and +2 base running. Fangraphs has him at -.7 runs defensively and +.7 runs base running. Prospectus has his defense as +5 runs this year (and while I don't like their metric, it is the only one where the PBP data/Fenway Left Field issue isn't there). Like I said, average at both basically. He sucked beyond belief offensively to start the season, and was bad at defense and baserunning. That has changed since.
   124. Dan Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:15 AM (#3890826)
If Crawford is back to his career norms next season I will absolutely forgive him for the lost year.

Lackey however is beyond redemption.
   125. Joel W Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:15 AM (#3890827)
It feels like JD Drew in 2007, and I hope Carl hits a bunch of home runs off the Indians in the playoffs like JD did in 2007.
   126. Dale Sams Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:21 AM (#3890830)
Except as I've noted elsewhere, Drew's OPS+ was 107...Crawford's is 76...which will be higher after tonight. I probably shouldn't have complained after his HR and double.
   127. Mattbert Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:22 AM (#3890831)

Absolutely, but I think the more pertinent question is, will Crawford come around? And what will coming around look like?

The guy who hits .300 and learned how to take a few walks his last couple seasons...I don't see too many encouraging signs to suggest that guy's coming back any time soon. And dude's gonna be 30 on Friday. I can't shake the feeling that we've signed up for Devon White's decline phase. As our left fielder.
   128. Joel W Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:24 AM (#3890835)
Except that JD Drew had an OPS of .728 at the end of July in 2007, before going off for a .926 OPS in August and September.
   129. Dale Sams Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:24 AM (#3890836)
How do you let Dunn bat against Sabathia in that situation? (diff game, yes I know)
   130. Joel W Posted: August 02, 2011 at 02:40 AM (#3890842)
Rivera is nothing short of remarkable.
