Wow, I did not realize how bad Papi had been slumping: .169/.300/.339 in his last 21 G coming into tonight.

It's amazing what not having that slump in April will do for perspective...

To be fair though, it's only 70 PA. There's a bunch of IL games where he got one PH appearance.
   6. Dan Posted: July 23, 2011 at 11:55 PM (#3884001)
Why isn't Crawford stealing 2nd??

Was just going to post the same thing.

That was just incredibly slow running. Ortiz absolutely should have beaten that throw.
   9. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 23, 2011 at 11:58 PM (#3884006)
FP, agreed on both counts, just didn't have any impression that he'd been scuffling.

Hey, a GIDP. Haven't seen one of those in a while!
   11. Dan Posted: July 23, 2011 at 11:59 PM (#3884008)
Well that really sucked.

Hey, a GIDP. Haven't seen one of those in a while!

...you must have a different definition of "grounded" than I do.
   13. plink Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:00 AM (#3884010)
Ortiz would've been safe if he had slid toward 1st.
   14. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:07 AM (#3884017)
I know that dp in the third didn't count, but amazingly the Sox are well behind the pace they'd need to break the GIDP record, which is 174 by the 1990 Red Sox. (They have 94 GIDPs in 97 G -- so I guess it only seems like 2 per game.)
   15. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:09 AM (#3884021)
That's some impressive warning track power, Scutaro.
   16. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:09 AM (#3884022)
[dp in the second, that should have been]
   17. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3884025)
Stupid dive by Pedroia. I'm pretty sure he's out regardless but that was a really silly decision.
   18. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3884026)
And NESN's commercials take so long that they miss a hit!
   19. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:18 AM (#3884027)
That line drive is the kind of hit that I was expected Crawford would be taking away by playing shallow in LF. Instead he plays deeper there than the visiting teams' LFers do.

uh ok, you got me. I was getting a beer when that play happened. I figured with Tek at the plate, it was a solid assumption...
   21. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:25 AM (#3884031)
So did anyone else on MLB.tv here Remy go off about Lowell in between innings? He said something like "He throws out the first pitch and now this; go home already. Talk about an arrogant athlete."

Definitely a solid assumption that Tek at the plate is the right time to get a beer.
   23. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:29 AM (#3884033)
I love how this team gets 15 base runners against Felix Hernandez and then puts up 1-2-3 innings on 5 pitches against Blake Beavan.

Wha???? Wasn't sarcastic?
   25. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:39 AM (#3884036)
It might have been sarcastic. Or not. I'm not really sure. I was too surprised to hear it to note the tone, to be honest.
   26. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:42 AM (#3884037)
I'm going to assume sarcasm, Lowell seems too universally acknowledged as a great and unassuming guy.

That's the second hit that it seemed to me Ichiro maybe could have gotten to if he'd gone full speed.
   27. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:48 AM (#3884038)
That's the second hit that it seemed to me Ichiro maybe could have gotten to if he'd gone full speed.

The defensive numbers hate Ichiro's defense this year, for what it's worth.
   28. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:49 AM (#3884040)
Also, it was incredibly awkward to watch/listen to that kid in the booth.
   29. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:50 AM (#3884041)
After more though, I don't think Remy was sarcastic. I think something Lowell said in the both during yesterday's game really pissed off Remy.
   30. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 24, 2011 at 12:52 AM (#3884042)
I'm sure we'll hear more about it if everyone on MLBtv heard it.

First XBH for Gonzalez since the AS break I think.

What the hell was that, Adrian?
   35. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:02 AM (#3884048)
On replay that wasn't as close to going through as I thought it was.
   36. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:07 AM (#3884049)
Really? Mike Carp again?
   37. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3884050)
If you look at where Varitek was set up for the pitch Carp hit for the HR, it was supposed to be outside corner...instead, it was right in a lefty's wheelhouse - down and in.
   38. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3884051)
Mike Carp didn't have an RBi in 100 AB before last night.
   39. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:21 AM (#3884057)
I listened to it a few more times, and I'm pretty sure Remy wasn't joking.

Can we please score a ####### run off of the guy throwing straight 91 MPH fastballs?
   43. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:35 AM (#3884064)
Well at least Varitek reaching means we clear the pitcher and set up a good situation to score in the 8th.
   44. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:36 AM (#3884066)
That fan just cost us the game tying run.

I want to hug Ellsbury.
   50. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:42 AM (#3884075)
I like that Francona has both Williams (if we didn't score in the 7th) and Bard (if we did) warming up to start the bottom of the 7th. Now, we need Ellsbury to steal second, and Pedroia to knock him in, to get insurance. If Ellsbury gets thrown out, you get to lead off the 8th with Pedroia. No biggie...

I hope Remy is gone soon , I really don't like him much

Hope that fan missed the big Ellsbury hit - he needs to be shot
   52. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:45 AM (#3884078)
There was no way Varitek was scoring on that, even if the fan didn't interfere.
   53. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:45 AM (#3884079)
Phil, did you watch the clip of him ripping on Lowell?
   54. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:45 AM (#3884080)
Also, WTF is up with this team and scoring in the 7th inning?
   55. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:47 AM (#3884083)
92 runs scored in the 7th inning this season.

Mate, I missed it. We were busy last night at the pub and I feel asleep from around then until the amazing Youks play at third to keep the game at one nil

Ackley is lucky to be on here - pretty sure Bard struck him out on the 2-2
   61. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:58 AM (#3884091)
Oh jeez. Strikes would be nice.
   62. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:58 AM (#3884092)
Beavan got that call several times tonight, Sox pitchers haven't gotten it at all.

   64. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:59 AM (#3884094)
And now a blown call at third. Cool.
   65. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 24, 2011 at 01:59 AM (#3884095)
Ackley has been out twice this inning
   66. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:00 AM (#3884097)
By the way, bunting was so stupid for Seattle there. You're down two runs, you don't intentionally give away an out!
   67. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:01 AM (#3884098)
That blown call at third is one for the ages - even worse on the replay
   68. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:02 AM (#3884099)
I am utterly amazed that the ump managed to call that a strike.

That blown call at third is one for the ages - even worse on the replay

It was simply a case of an umpire trying to be too cute by half, and trying to make himself look sharp for noting Youk wasn't on the bag. Except he got on the bag before the runner got there anyway.

Alright, one more out...
   70. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:03 AM (#3884101)
That was an incredible pitch - one more bard and that will be 5 outs for you today
   71. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:08 AM (#3884105)
Pretty sure Crawford was safe.

Geez, Crawford must have a patent on slowly-hit ground balls to the right side of the infield. Don't you get the feeling that he's developed some terrible habit, and that he'll figure it out at some point, and have a crazy month or something? I just wonder if it'll be in 2011...
   75. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:10 AM (#3884109)

I think he might be trying to pull the ball too much in an effort to hit for more power to try and justify his contract. That's all I can come up with for an explanation of why he's constantly rolling over balls and grounding to the right side.

Farnsworth blows a save in KC, Rays & Royals tied with 2 outs in the 9th.
   77. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:13 AM (#3884113)
Damn. He had that but lost it during his roll.

It was a strike over the plate in any case
   89. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:27 AM (#3884125)
3 game lead over NYY. Which is good, since tomorrow is Wakefield vs. Pineda.
   90. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:34 AM (#3884127)
Tomorrow is a great example of a game that, on paper, we should probably lose - except that:

1) Wakefield could totally pitch 7 innings, give up three hits, and throw 85 pitches, and/or
2) We could score 12 runs, and it won't matter if friggin' Ass McClown is pitching, we'll win the game.

Regardless, the bullpen is very well set for tomorrow. Bard probably needs a day off, but Wheeler Aceves, and Albers are very well-rested, so even if Wakefield only goes 4 IP or something, if we can score a few runs, our bullpen can keep us in it...

...now 59-27 since the crappy 2-10 start - that's .686 ball over 86 games! And a 111-win pace over the course of a season.
   91. Dan Posted: July 24, 2011 at 02:37 AM (#3884130)
Rays lose in the 10th after standing bases loaded with no outs in the top half.
   92. booond Posted: July 24, 2011 at 03:12 AM (#3884144)
Are the Rays done?
   93. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: July 25, 2011 at 12:53 AM (#3884496)
By the way, for record, my comment in #90 ends up looking pretty good. "We could score 12 runs, and it won't matter if friggin' Ass McClown is pitching, we'll win the game". Well, Wakefield gave up 7 runs in 6.1 IP - that would be Ass McClown - and we scored 12 runs.

60-27 since the crappy start. And hosting Kansas City for four at home, with Lester coming back tomorrow. This is getting pretty silly.
