Scutaro's defense reminds me way too much of Jeter's at this point. He makes every play look tougher than it is.

His arm is horrible
   3. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:15 PM (#3872303)
I know it's unreasonable given the team's success, but I'm deeply tired of the 7-year-long SS merry-go-round.
   4. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:20 PM (#3872304)
Ellsbury rarely has a bad at bat - always putting a good swing in hitters counts it seems
   5. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:23 PM (#3872308)
I was very much an Els skeptic coming into this season -- thought maybe we'd seen the best we ever were going to see from him at the plate -- his revival has been fantastic.
   6. Dan Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3872309)
I always thought that Ellsbury had the potential to turn into Johnny Damon, but I wasn't expecting the ~20 HR Yankee Stadium version of Damon.
   7. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3872310)
Oh yeah, and it really pisses me off that I have EI but am forced to watch and listen to the O's feed because I'm in their area.

Tough error.
   8. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3872312)
Y'know, this Large Papa fellow seems to be working out okay, perhaps we should be signing him for next year.
   9. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3872313)
That was hammered
   10. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:28 PM (#3872314)
When this offense gets it's #### together... just wow.
   11. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:29 PM (#3872318)
They have to. Not that we're in Russia. This isn't Russia. But they have to.

OK, let's get 5 innings in quickly before the downpours.
   12. Dan Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3872320)

This.
   13. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3872322)
I'll retract that statement, after I have had t watch Tex, Scutaro and McDonald... haven't we had enough of him?
   14. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:31 PM (#3872323)
4.5 innings, I meant.
   15. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:32 PM (#3872324)
Wow, these guys stink.
   16. Dan Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:35 PM (#3872325)
Please, please don't let this one get rained out. Darnell needs every hit he can get to count.
   17. Joey B. is counting the days to Trea Turner Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:35 PM (#3872326)
Yeah, I'm not hearing from too many of the Orioles fans nowadays who predicted they would be a decent team this season. This is like the sixth year in a row now they have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball.
   18. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:36 PM (#3872328)
Are they really counting Youk's AB as a single? If that wasn't an error, what is?
   19. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:37 PM (#3872329)
Looks like lots of rain is coming.
   20. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:39 PM (#3872330)
On that map, I live right at 8 o'clock of that "495" route indicator.
   21. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:41 PM (#3872332)
OK, the weather guy on that site says light rain Boston and north. I'll get soaked here. That's fine, we have a roof.
   22. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:43 PM (#3872333)
This is one of the worst innings of baseball I have seen in a long time.

Also one of the most fun.
   23. Jay Seaver Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:47 PM (#3872336)
Not lying - I thought I was going to see a quick double play when I sat down a half hour ago with Dusty on first. Instead, the pummeling.
   24. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3872338)
gotta run - about to go on a 12 hour drinking binge for the rugby final in Brisbane - ####### fuck yeah!!
   25. Jay Seaver Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:54 PM (#3872344)
Nice last out in the inning by Pedroia - now that there's a lot more to praise about the team, just how great his defense has been this year doesn't get enough play.
   26. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 08, 2011 at 11:54 PM (#3872346)
gotta run - about to go on a 12 hour drinking binge for the rugby final in Brisbane

Like an Aussie needs an excuse.
   27. Dan Posted: July 09, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3872355)
Ellsbury with two 400+ foot flyouts tonight. Jesus.
   28. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3872356)
40 pitches through 4 innings for Beckett. Just a dual-purpose stomping.
   29. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 12:27 AM (#3872361)
The tally: One O's pitcher pulled for being battered, the other for being bruised.
   30. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 12:42 AM (#3872369)
You're not allowed to feel any sort of pain, Beckett. Just not allowed.
   31. Dan Posted: July 09, 2011 at 12:52 AM (#3872374)
Beckett's definitely not the same since he slipped.
   32. Dan Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:00 AM (#3872378)
So now Wakefield or Miller is our #1 starter? Jesus ####### christ I hope he just turned his ankle or something...
   33. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:09 AM (#3872385)
Somewhere in Rhode Island, Kevin Millwood puts away the last of his voodoo dolls.
   34. Textbook Editor Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:21 AM (#3872393)
See, they called up Weiland for Sunday and now Beckett gets hurt. If they had just let Milwood pitch Beckett would be fine!

Over on Extra Bases Abraham was complaining he didn't know 8 of the 20 "celebrities" doomed to play in the All-Star Softball game. I did better than that--I don't know 16 of the "celebrities" on that list. Yet another sign the north side of 40 is in my sights...
   35. Textbook Editor Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:23 AM (#3872396)
Great. Injured knee for Beckett. We're going to have to win games 12-11 for the next 4 weeks, aren't we?
   36. Textbook Editor Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:26 AM (#3872399)
"mildly hyperextended left knee," according to NESN's game blog.

Maybe this is all a pretense to keeping Beckett from pitching in the AS Game (and thus getting some rest)?

[/grasping at straws]
   37. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 01:58 AM (#3872416)
Josh F'in Reddick.
   38. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:01 AM (#3872420)
Is Showalter really going to protest this warning? With what? "Honest, this pitcher just sucks!"
   39. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:02 AM (#3872423)
Wow, David Ortiz really does not like getting thrown at at all.
   40. Koot Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:03 AM (#3872424)
Suck it up, Orioles. Maybe the Red Sox would take their foot off the gas pedal if Showalter didn't run his mouth in spring training.
   41. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:04 AM (#3872425)
And it looks like Gregg got tossed even before Ortiz went after him. Not a dull moment tonight.
   42. Textbook Editor Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:06 AM (#3872427)
[thought experiment]

2012 lineup

Ellsbury (L)
Pedroia (R)
Gonzalez (L)
Youkilis (R)
Ortiz (L)
Salty/Varitek (S)
Crawford (L)
Reddick (L)
SS TBD (?)

Handing Reddick the LF starting job makes the team awfully lefty-heavy... And I know Ortiz is set to be a FA but for the sake of this exercise he's coming back on a short deal.

If the SS is Lowrie, as a SH he gives you some options on how to break up the lineup, but I don't see a lot of ways Crawford cracks the top 4-5 of this lineup. I suppose if they don't bring Ortiz back you could get a RH DH and slot Crawford into the 5th spot assuming he hits.

[/thought experiment]
   43. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:12 AM (#3872432)
So, what sort of suspensions are we looking at here? Ultimately, I think it's five for Ortiz, maybe the same for Gregg.
   44. Chip Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:13 AM (#3872433)
Umpires mystified about who to toss because they're wearing warmup shirts over their numbers. Jim Johnson apparently booted for going at it with Saltalamacchia in the scrum.
   45. Chip Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:14 AM (#3872435)
BTW, have there ever been two lamer punches thrown than the one each that Gregg and Ortiz attempted? Neither of which had any chance of connecting.
   46. Chip Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:15 AM (#3872437)

   47. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3872439)
They're baseball players, not hockey players. Besides, who'd really want a baseball fight where people could actually get hurt?
   48. Koot Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3872440)
After watching those two punches, I'm going to resort to shoving if I get into a fight.
   49. Chip Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3872443)
Also, why couldn't we have gotten Lackey suspended for a month in the middle of that?
   50. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:27 AM (#3872448)
49 - That would have been ideal.

Take the win, hope Ortiz and Saltalamacchia don't get suspended too long for that.
   51. Jay Seaver Posted: July 09, 2011 at 02:31 AM (#3872452)
Some Tony Lee guy doing the post-game interview. Did Heidi get ejected as well? :)
