shane victorino has been activated off the DL. this news can only be considered great.
   2. Brian C Posted: July 19, 2011 at 03:37 PM (#3881306)
Is Gern going again tonight? Can't change routine after a win!
   3. Spahn Insane Posted: July 19, 2011 at 09:04 PM (#3881607)
Gern is skipping this one.
   4. Spahn Insane Posted: July 19, 2011 at 09:05 PM (#3881608)
Besides, this one's not the sure win that Lopez/Halladay was.
   5. SteveM. Posted: July 19, 2011 at 10:31 PM (#3881674)
I watched The Natural with my son today and he turned to me and said the Cubs could use Roy Hobbs. Now,Robert Redford may be over 70, but I bet he can play a better LF then Soriano.
   6. Dan The Mediocre is one of "the rest" Posted: July 19, 2011 at 11:26 PM (#3881712)
What are the conditions on the field? If it's really hot and humid again, anything can happen.
   7. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 12:14 AM (#3881747)
Why is Baker hitting cleanup and Soto 8th? Can anyone fathom Quade's lineups?
   8. Brian C Posted: July 20, 2011 at 01:37 AM (#3881824)
Dunno about Soto 8th - that's asinine - but Baker's hitting .318/.367/.543 for his career against lefties. Sounds OK to me.
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 01:44 AM (#3881842)
And he's doing a bang-up job with runners on tonight.
   10. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:00 AM (#3881863)
This is resembling Garza's last start.
   11. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:03 AM (#3881866)
I am still shocked that Hendry refuses to put Baker on the market. As if the 2012 Cubs will just need a RH off the bench to compete.
   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:20 AM (#3881876)
How has Garza looked tonight? I'm surprised Quade is going to send him back out there with 113 pitches. Shows his lack of faith in the pen right now.
   13. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:22 AM (#3881877)
Jim Hendry has chronically approached roster construction from year-to-year as though he thinks the Cubs are just a piece or two away from being serious contenders.
   14. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:26 AM (#3881880)
Garza has looked damn good tonight, but it might have been time to get him out of there.
   15. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:27 AM (#3881882)
Again, why is Blake DeWitt called upon here when Fukudome is on the bench?
   16. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:29 AM (#3881883)
This will be criminal if Garza winds up with back-to-back ND's.
   17. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:31 AM (#3881885)
Walks-why is Blake DeWitt on this team?
   18. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:35 AM (#3881886)
Because Mike Quade is...well, you know...an idiot.

Garza shouldn't have even been out there to start this inning. He did a fine job tonight, but instead of ending it on a high note with 7 strong innings, he gets to watch someone else try to clean up his very small mess.
   19. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:36 AM (#3881887)
Not to mention that when Quade pinch hit DeWitt for Baker, he then put Barney in at 2nd, blowing throw all three of 2B in one move.
   20. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:38 AM (#3881888)
Poor Garza. He deserves better.
   21. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:38 AM (#3881889)
Didn't see that coming.
   22. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:42 AM (#3881892)
I'm ready to say it: I dislike Quade more than I did Dusty Baker.
   23. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:42 AM (#3881893)
Great D by the Cubs. Not a sentence I use every day.
   24. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:47 AM (#3881894)
Walks, so do I. I will say this for Baker-if you have a veteran team, he can win with it. I don't think Quade could win with the '27 Yankees.
   25. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:49 AM (#3881896)
I think the interim years since Baker was around have softened my disdain for him. I won't ever forget how frustrating he was. His decisions often didn't make sense. But Quade's don't, either, and he just seems a lot less likable, despite evidence to the contrary.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:50 AM (#3881899)
It's also discouraging that the Cubs haven't scored since the second batter of the game. Doesn't exactly fill you with optimism that this won't be another loss.
   27. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:52 AM (#3881901)
Soriano is such a miserable player to watch in just about all aspects of the game.
   28. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:54 AM (#3881903)
I haven't heard it mentioned here much lately (maybe because it's like pointing out that water is wet) but Soriano is completely useless. Just $18 million a year down the toilet.
   29. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:55 AM (#3881904)
Quade is the first Cubs manager I just loathe. I was against him getting the job in the off-season, and have yet to see evidence he can be a competent major league manager. He is perfect example of the Peter principle.
   30. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:55 AM (#3881905)
And there's Walks pointing it out...
   31. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 02:57 AM (#3881906)
I think Quade is less loathed in my head because I had no expectations for this year, while the 2004 collapse was just a kick in the nuts.
   32. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:01 AM (#3881907)
Its almost August and Colvin is still down in the minors. As is Wellington Castillo. Starts are being given to Rodrigo Lopez and Ramon Ortiz remains in the bullpen while Carpenter is shipped back to Iowa. John Grabow remains on this team for reasons only God and Jim Hendry know. We are 19 games out of first, and Jeff Baker is considered an untouchable. What a shitty season.
   33. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:04 AM (#3881908)
It's just fascinating to me that Soriano has aged so terribly so quickly that he's already passed the despised albatross. Now you can barely muster the energy to get upset (unless it's one of his one-of-a-kind fielding misadventures) because you just do not expect ANYTHING positive from him.
   34. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:06 AM (#3881909)
Man, that sums it up. I'm not the type who thinks you have to play the kids regardless if they're ready or not. That's been the knock against the Cubs with regards to most of their fizzled out prospects. But there's no excuse not to have those guys getting playing time in the majors since the vets blocking them are performing as badly as the kids possibly would.
   35. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:07 AM (#3881910)
Go back and look at the zips projections for him at the time of the signing. Scary accurate (and depressing for the next couple years).

And I agree with your explanation for the lack of outrage.

   37. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:09 AM (#3881912)
I had read somewhere where the Cubs were talking with the Yankees about Sean Marshall, but the catch is they also have to take Soriano (presumably with the Cubs pitching in money).
   38. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:09 AM (#3881913)
Marshall has not fared well against the Phillies this season.
   39. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:10 AM (#3881914)
Unfucking real, Quade keeps Marshall in for two innings and once again, his bullpen management comes back to bite the team.
   40. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:11 AM (#3881915)
Quade doesn't know what he's doing.
   41. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:12 AM (#3881916)
I know Marmol is unreliable, but what about Russell? Why not Wood in the 8th? BPJ?
   42. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:13 AM (#3881918)
And now Fukudome bats...against the lefty.

#### you, Quade, you ugly ####.
   43. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:14 AM (#3881920)
Bastardo. Giggle.
   44. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:15 AM (#3881922)
And by inserting Barney for DeWitt, he ensured that in the 9th, he didn't have a RH to git against the Philly lefty.
   45. These Guys Suck Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:18 AM (#3881923)
Len, don't apologize for Quade. It's beneath you.
   46. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:18 AM (#3881924)
Are we positive Quade isn't ripping pages from the Book of George Costanza and trying to get fired?
   47. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:19 AM (#3881926)
It's just a shame that the Cubs were actually in a position to beat Cliff Lee, but Quade's mangled lineup construction and in-game decisions really stacked the deck against that happening.
   48. SteveM. Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:22 AM (#3881929)
Well if he is channelling his inner Costanza, he won't have any world series trophies to drag around in the parking lot.
   49. Christopher Linden Posted: July 20, 2011 at 03:30 AM (#3881932)
Anyone know where Philadelphia ranks in come-from-behind wins? Seems like they're always coming up off the deck in the seventh or eighth to tie win (trend started with a 2-run 9th down 4-2 on Opening Day in Houston). Phils are 7th in the NL in runs, but 2nd in runs after the sixth.
