Jim, Why not start Moore with Niemann in relief? Or do they think it would work better the other way--with Moore coming in at the 1st sign of trouble?

I'm actually not worried about the Sox tiring out their pitchers on the way to the playoffs. At this point I figure they're better off with the adrenalin than with the rest.

Rather a poor 0-2 pitch.

#701 The talking heads have been saying how Moore has always started and needs lots of warmup time so Madden probably would start him if he were going to use him at all.
   710. Dale Sams Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:24 AM (#3940353)
I'm turning it off, it's over.

Do this, Nicky!

Borowski was the closer on that team, and he was good.

Not in the playoffs and didn't he get injured during Spring Training the next year or have it discovered he tore something or other early in the next season?

As a btw, Hobbit was absolutely killin' it in AAA the month before you traded him, NTN - doesn't really mean anything, but his opponents' OPS was, like, .350 or so.

I bet Francona starts Lackey if there's a one-gamer. And I bet people here lose their #### when it's announced.

If there is a playoff on Thursday and Francona starts Lackey I will be rooting for the Rays to win. Because if they're that stupid the Sox deserve to lose.

6-6.

Francona starts Lackey

Lackey or Wake...with Salty catching. 4 PBs and WPs in the first inning alone 3-0.

Was he calling that a strike to lefties earlier in the game? If Papelbon can throw that for the rest of the game, he should be unhittable.

Going out there again, nice.

   730. Jay Seaver Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:27 AM (#3940375)
At this point, MLB really has to be looking into developing umpire robots.

I don't see Beckett starting 163.

   737. Jim Wisinski Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:29 AM (#3940381)
Jim, Why not start Moore with Niemann in relief? Or do they think it would work better the other way--with Moore coming in at the 1st sign of trouble?

No, I think Moore is easily the best option. Niemann is not reliable and it's clear that the Rays don't trust him either since he was pulled after one bad inning in favor of a talented rookie with crappy control at AAA and poor results in the majors thus far (Torres). That was a heck of a gamble and shows that all the knowledge they have from being experienced baseball people working with Niemann gives them little confidence right now. But actually skipping him, one of the guys relied on all season to start, in favor of a rookie is something that just doesn't tend to happen in baseball. So that's why I think the odds still favor Niemann starting with an extremely short leash.

However, if that's going to happen the Rays are the team and this is the situation to do it.
   738. Gamingboy Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:29 AM (#3940383)
Markakis is giving a epic battle here.
   739. The District Attorney Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:30 AM (#3940385)
I'd be worried about Moore getting Salomon Torres'd if he blows it.

The fact that he is so good, while it makes him theoretically the better choice to start the game, also means that screwing him up -- even if it has a low probability to happen -- might not be the best risk/reward.

Niemann isn't terrible either, so that helps.
   740. NTNgod Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:30 AM (#3940386)
As a btw, Hobbit was absolutely killin' it in AAA the month before you traded him, NTN - doesn't really mean anything, but his opponents' OPS was, like, .350 or so.

Yeah, but guys with 85MPH fastballs are toast when they don't have location - and he didn't have his location in his brief Brewers tenure*. I can see why he made it to the Brewers on waivers when they claimed him this year.

(* I saw him pitch a few Reds games as well)

740: Agreed (and he didn't have it with the Reds this yeareither). I was just noting that he found his command a month or two back, that's all. Still no velocity, of course.

   748. The District Attorney Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:31 AM (#3940394)
Of course, if Niemann actually is hurt, then there may not be much choice.
   749. Hugh Jorgan Posted: September 28, 2011 at 02:32 AM (#3940395)
boy, Gonzo never looks too fast when rounding the bases, but he's quick around that bag when fielding. No chance to get the guy at second, but still he got rid of it pretty quickly.

Don't get me wrong--I'd start Beckett and ask him to get me 9 outs on Thursday, but I just can't see the Red Sox doing that.

Of course, there may not *be* a 163...

1-for-14 in his career against Papelbon, and a softly hit ball finds the outfield. This is ridiculous.

By the way I kind of combined Farnsworth and Borowski in my mind. Borowski blew the 9th inning in game one but then pitched pretty well in his other two games. Farnsworth and some innings where he imploded as well but then I believe pitched an inning that was good.
