Am I the only one who thinks that if Theo makes a significant move by the deadline, it'll be something both huge and unexpected? It seems like mediocrities really won't do much for this team, outside of maybe a Reed Johnson or a Will Ohman or a Randy Choate. There's really no positions with big enough holes to make guys like Orlando Cabrera or Paul Byrd or Jeff Suppan, etc. necessary types of trades to work on. The only way that Theo can make a significant improvement on this team is by going really big. Maybe a trade for someone like Chad Billingsley or Ubaldo Jimenez or Hanley Ramirez or something insane like that? I imagine Theo is on the phones trying to put together something crazy instead of bothering with small potatoes this year. Or as ST would put it, he's probably working on "Smile" or the newest equivalent.

Sounds right to me Dan. I think outfield depth and maybe another bullpen arm are it. Find a Bobby Kielty and a Mike Myers and be done, let the farm system regenerate a bit.

I wonder if there is a point where the delay would have them bounce Lester from the start. I won't be shocked if a 9PM start features Weiland on the mound.

I don't know. I'd sure appreciate a non wakefieldian level starter...
   4. Dan Posted: July 25, 2011 at 11:16 PM (#3885095)
Any word on if or when they can get this game in?

NESN says game starts at 9:30.

Well I say you have an ugly face.
   7. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:35 AM (#3885199)
The 0-1 curveball to Gordon was right down the middle for ball 1.
   8. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:38 AM (#3885201)
Well I say you have an ugly face.

I'm confused, this is Lester starting, not Lackey...

Is Hosmer a chance for ROY?
   10. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:39 AM (#3885203)
Dan I would agree with the possible exception of a solid #4 starter for depth.
   11. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:40 AM (#3885204)
Salty !
   12. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:47 AM (#3885211)
Gonzo ?
   13. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:50 AM (#3885214)
Why the #### is Gonzalez striking out against Kyle Davies?
   14. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:51 AM (#3885216)
And with three swings and misses in thew at bat....
   15. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3885217)
Frenchy, of all people, jogs to first thinking he has a walk? Really?
   16. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3885219)
As if Francour knows what a ####### strike is.
   17. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:52 AM (#3885220)
What do you think it would take to trade for Brendan Ryan? I'd love him at SS instead of Scutaro and as a late innings defensive replacement if/when Lowrie is back.
   18. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:54 AM (#3885223)
Looks like the Mariners will be running their streak to 16

I'd like to get Ryan - hopefully not much
   20. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 01:57 AM (#3885228)
I grudgingly give props to Scutaro for preventing a probable run there.
   21. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:00 AM (#3885230)
Yeah Scutaro did well there
   22. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:03 AM (#3885231)
It makes me sad that the NFL lockout is over. I was hoping they'd lose a solid chunk of their season and the NFL would lose some popularity as a result.
   23. villageidiom Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:06 AM (#3885237)
On #1... Earlier on NESN they reminded us that last year's deadline deal was Salty. It wouldn't surprise me if any deal they make at the deadline is with an eye toward 2012+ rather than 2011.
   24. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:08 AM (#3885241)
Texas Line 3 3 3 5 2(in progress 1 out)

Crawford gets ###### on another outside strike call. What the hell did he do to the umpires to get treated this way?
   26. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:10 AM (#3885244)
Josh ############# Reddick!
   27. villageidiom Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:12 AM (#3885248)
It makes me sad that the NFL lockout is over. I was hoping they'd lose a solid chunk of their season and the NFL would lose some popularity as a result.
Every day on the way to work I'd turn on ESPN Radio, and every day they were talking about football. In July. When baseball was the only active major professional sport. It was like Brett Favre Watch all over again.

Then I'd flip to WEEI and they were talking about Whitey Bulger.
   28. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:16 AM (#3885253)
I love Josh Reddick - was on the phone when he hit that double
   29. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:25 AM (#3885262)
It's kind of nice that we might have functioning corner outfielders for the next 60 games.

Is Gonzalez going to start hitting home runs again at some point?
   33. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:38 AM (#3885274)
Kyle Davies against the Red Sox offense at Fenway, and only 1 run so far.
   34. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:43 AM (#3885279)
The name change is mostly for Darren, as I think he criticized my Sox Therapy bona fides the other day, and because, well, I'm the guy arguing that Carl Crawford is fine and we should completely discount all of the bad stuff about him based on my armchair psychoanalysis. I mean, I'm right, but that's not the point.

And god live pitch f/x for umpire criticism is just so cool
   35. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:46 AM (#3885282)
Jesus christ, Crawford...
   36. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:48 AM (#3885287)
Rays are gonna have to be sellers. They're now down 2-1 as Cliff Pennington just took Hellickson deep. When Cliff Pennington is beating you, I think it's time to acknowledge it's just not going to be your year. Yankees and Red Sox should both be ~10 spots clear of a playoff spot by the end of the week.
   37. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:48 AM (#3885289)
Yeah that was ugly. Perhaps I should change my tune.
   38. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:49 AM (#3885291)
10 games clear of a playoff spot, that is. Whoops.
   39. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:50 AM (#3885292)
Jesus ####### christ, throw strikes to Alcides Escobar. Egads.
   40. Srul Itza Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:50 AM (#3885293)
Did David Ortiz really try to steal a base?
   41. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:52 AM (#3885295)
How does one walk Escobar?
   42. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:53 AM (#3885296)
He was running on a full count with Crawford at the plate. Crawford swung at ball 4, starting the strike 'em out-throw 'em out DP.
   43. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 02:54 AM (#3885298)
Not used to being on base and gets caught in a run down

At some point soon, the Red Sox are going to knock the crap out of Kyle Davies.

Also, I'd love to see Lester pitch at least part of the 6th inning. I know he's on a pitch count tonight, though...
   47. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:02 AM (#3885310)
I wonder if the Twins still think they are in this after tonight....
   48. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:03 AM (#3885311)
This umpire is just shocking tonight
   49. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:04 AM (#3885312)
The 1-0 even looked outside to Ells
   50. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:05 AM (#3885314)
I've decided that the reason that ESPN was doing wall-to-wall coverage of the lockout was that they were trying to keep pressure on the owners and players to get the deal done. The NFL is a huge moneymaker for them and losing any portion of the season would have been a nightmare.

They could not possibly have thought that fans really wanted to hear hours and hours of discussions about the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

What's Lesters pitch count?
   54. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:10 AM (#3885319)
80-85 - just heard
   55. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:13 AM (#3885320)
Well fielded, Crawford.
   56. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:13 AM (#3885321)
Played poorly by Crawford and bad throw.
   57. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:14 AM (#3885322)
Why is Lester still in?
   58. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:14 AM (#3885323)
Looks like they need to score another run now...
   59. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:15 AM (#3885324)
Gee, that was a shocking development. Good thing you let him stay in an extra batter after getting drilled.
   60. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:15 AM (#3885325)
That was some nice defense from Crawford. Really earning that paycheck.
   61. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:16 AM (#3885326)
Surprised he was left in after Butler's double
   62. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:22 AM (#3885328)
That's going to boost the hell out of Pedroia's UZR and TZ! :)

Dear Safeco Insurance,

The problem with putting annoying whiners on your commercials is that it is really annoying to listen to the annoying whiners.

Pirates up 3-0

#### yeah
   65. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:27 AM (#3885333)
WTF Adrian? Davies should be ####### BP for you, not a guy you're string out against.
   66. Darren Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:31 AM (#3885334)
You know how good teams lose sometimes? I feel like this might be one of those. Have a good night.
   67. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:43 AM (#3885337)
Would've been nice to at least clear the Scutaro that inning.
   68. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:46 AM (#3885338)
Great. Now Youkilis is out for some kind of injury.
   69. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:49 AM (#3885339)
1 run against Kyle ######' Davies. Seriously.
   70. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:50 AM (#3885340)
Youk rolled his ankle. It didn't look too bad, but it did look tender.
   71. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 03:52 AM (#3885342)
WTF - where was that a balk?
   72. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:00 AM (#3885345)
Who ever is doing the TV production tonight is obviously tired
   73. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:04 AM (#3885346)
I feel like a walk off but Paps in a non save situation means the Royals will score
   74. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:09 AM (#3885347)
I just popped in to see who would be in a panic over Paplebon, and then he was good. Ruined my fun.
   75. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:17 AM (#3885350)
BB Ref lists Navarro at 5'11" and 170, he looks a lot bigger than that to me. I like him, but his minor league number don't really impress. Looks like a ball player though.
   76. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:19 AM (#3885351)
No need to throw Crawford a strike here
   77. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:19 AM (#3885352)
God Crawford, you're killing me.
   78. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:19 AM (#3885353)
Two shocking swings
   79. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:20 AM (#3885354)
That's nowhere near a swing. Are you ####### kidding me?
   80. Phil Coorey. Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:21 AM (#3885355)
Didn't go
   81. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:22 AM (#3885356)
That's a HR at NYS
   82. plink Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:22 AM (#3885357)
At least Francona didn't pinch-run for Ortiz.
   83. Dale Sams Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:22 AM (#3885358)
Close enough. That's the ugliest AB i've ever seen from a position player, and probably 99% of pitchers.
   84. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:25 AM (#3885359)
As a sometimes Royal fan, I have to say only scoring one run against Davies is a fail. But now that Collins and Crow have pitched the Royals bullpen gets dreadfully thin.
   85. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:26 AM (#3885360)
Did you watch this team in spring 2010? Ortiz looked at least that bad.
   86. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:26 AM (#3885361)
Good job Reddick!
   87. Joel W Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:27 AM (#3885362)
God can he cover a lot of ground.
   88. Dale Sams Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:27 AM (#3885363)

uhm...no.
   89. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:32 AM (#3885364)
I'm with Joel, Ortiz was that bad.
   90. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:32 AM (#3885365)
This umpire has got to be ####### joking. That hasn't been a ####### strike all night.

As a sometimes Royal fan, I have to say only scoring one run against Davies is a fail. But now that Collins and Crow have pitched the Royals bullpen gets dreadfully thin.

Holland has been pretty effective for them, no? And not just tonight, I mean.
   92. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:39 AM (#3885368)
True, Holland hasn't been bad. Obviously extra innings is high leverage, but he doesn't normally fill that role. Maybe he should be - or well maybe there just aren't that many innings where the Royals have the lead....
   93. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:39 AM (#3885369)
C'mon Navarro. You have to make that play.

"Billy Buckner coming up"
   95. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:41 AM (#3885371)
Why is Morales staying in to face Butler?
   96. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:41 AM (#3885372)
Melky is putting together his audition tape for the Yankees proving he can hit AL East pitching tonight.
   97. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:41 AM (#3885373)
Cabrera sure looked out on that pickoff play.
   98. Dan Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:44 AM (#3885375)
Melky was out, but it was probably a balk so whatever.
   99. Mike Webber Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:45 AM (#3885376)
On the KC telecast, the view of the Melky pickoff from behind first base looked like they got him. The KC announcers said nothing about the angle, which is probably their way of saying that Melky caught a break.
   100. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: July 26, 2011 at 04:48 AM (#3885382)
it was probably a balk so whatever.

I've completely given up on trying to understand what is and isn't a balk, and I've accepted that the rule doesn't make sense to me. So whatever the umps allow, I accept.
