Sox lineup:

Ellsbury CF
Scutaro SS
Gonzalez 1B
Pedroia 2B
Ortiz DH
Lowrie 3B
Crawford LF
Saltalamacchia C
McDonald RF
Pitching: RHP John Lackey (12-9, 5.98)

Scutaro #2? Just move Pedroia back there and be done with it.

Francona likes his lefty-righty lineups, as he should. Moving Pedroia back to second would interrupt that.

I hate the "Mr." when they've got the kids reading the lineups. I get that it's respectful in all, but 9 consecutive times just sounds dumb.

It's absurd. Would you ever tell your kid to say Mr. like that when referring to players?

"Wow Dad, Mr. Pedroia just hit that ball really far!"

I said the same thing to my wife!!!

Did Curtis learn that from Jetes?
   7. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:18 PM (#3912726)
I would have thought with the year Granderson's having that he would get those calls.
   8. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:21 PM (#3912729)
I have absolutely nothing against CC -- he seems like a perfectly good guy -- but I love that the Sox' battering of him has pushed him almost out of Cy consideration.

And of course as I'm typing that he hits Els.
   9. Dan Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:22 PM (#3912730)
4 of Sabathia's 6 HBP now have been Red Sox batters.
   10. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:24 PM (#3912733)
Els didn't go in hard at all, actually.
   11. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:27 PM (#3912736)
Yeah, that's a pretty standard slide. Teixeira's throw didn't really let Jeter get off the bag much to dodge the runner.
   12. Dan Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:30 PM (#3912741)
Thought Pedroia was out on "ball 2", but it just cost Sabathia one more pitch.

He's dialing up his fastball early on compared to how hard he usually throws it. He definitely wants this game more than a typical start. Usually don't see Sabathia turning it up to 95+ until his last inning or 2 of a game lately.

What a poised and cute little doll they've got in the booth (Dana Farber patient). You guys with early-teenage sons should pay attention.

I'd be a total mess if I had chemo, and I'm an adult (I think).
   15. Dan Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:39 PM (#3912748)
Can we make Lackey a reliever? He had a great first inning...
   16. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:40 PM (#3912749)
Man, I hope Lackey isn't one of those pitchers who gets mad when hitters overreact to making outs, because he is ridiculous out there sometimes.
   17. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:40 PM (#3912752)
Ehhh, that "single" by Chavez was really not his fault.
   18. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:42 PM (#3912753)
Jesus, Posada is slower than Gonzalez.
   19. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:42 PM (#3912755)
Sure, it was a softly hit ground ball that somehow got through, but Lackey's body language when guys can't make plays on stuff seems a little over the top.
   20. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:42 PM (#3912756)
Ehhh, that "single" by Chavez was really not his fault.

I thought the pitch Swisher sngled on was pretty good too. Slider down and away. Sometimes hitters just hit good pitches... Now the pitch he threw to walk Cano, I want to strangle him for.
   21. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3912761)
Pretty generous zone for Lowrie on this AB. He better do something with it...
   22. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3912763)
Am I the only one who thinks Lowrie looks like a dork with the double-flap helmet?
   23. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:48 PM (#3912764)
something like that.
   24. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:49 PM (#3912765)
Pretty generous zone for Lowrie on this AB. He better do something with it...

The 0-3 was the only pitch that clearly wasn't a strike. Hilarious.
   25. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:52 PM (#3912766)
CC walking against CC. Wasn't expecting that...
   26. Phil Coorey. Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:52 PM (#3912767)
Is that for real? Did Craword just take some difficult pitches?
   27. Dan Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:53 PM (#3912770)
I'm not sure I've seen Crawford lay off that many sliders down all year as he did in that one AB. Maybe he is making some progress.
   28. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:57 PM (#3912773)
Sabathia getting squeezed here too...
   29. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:58 PM (#3912774)
Heidi Watney is attractive.
   30. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:59 PM (#3912775)
Wow. This ump hates Sabathia.
   31. Dan Posted: August 30, 2011 at 11:59 PM (#3912776)
48 pitches for Sabathia with 2 outs in the 2nd inning.
   32. Jay Seaver Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:00 AM (#3912777)
Red Sox 3-427(*) with the bases loaded.

(*) Estimate
   33. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:00 AM (#3912778)
*sigh* at least Sabathia is up at 50 pitches now.
   34. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:01 AM (#3912779)
Really sucks not to score there, but at least he's up to 50 pitches.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Heidi Watney is anything special to look at?

Yes.
   36. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3912786)
It depends on how you define "special". She's certainly very attractive, but if "special" is meant to imply uniqueness I can see where he's coming from.

(This is a useful discussion.)
   37. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:13 AM (#3912787)
Yes. My cousin is nothing special to look at - Heidi Watney is absurdly stunning.
   38. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:15 AM (#3912788)
Oh Scutaro. Even when you succeed you fail.

####### stupid play by Scutaro. #######.
   40. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:16 AM (#3912791)
Scutaro has no baseball smarts at all.

Why the #### are you trying to stretch a single with no outs and Gonzalez, Pedroia, and Ortiz hitting behind you. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
   41. nick swisher hygiene Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3912792)
35--No.
   42. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:17 AM (#3912793)
She's attractive enough I guess. But certainly not stunningly so.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Heidi Watney is anything special to look at?
Yes. And I'm not generally big on blondes.

if "special" is meant to imply uniqueness I can see where he's coming from.
I would too--she's pretty in a very typical, beauty-queen sort of way--but I don't think that's what he means.
   44. Drew (Primakov, Gungho Iguanas) Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:20 AM (#3912796)
If you want unique, Naoko Funayama's available.

She's attractive enough I guess. But certainly not stunningly so.
Obviously to each his own. She might not be stunning compared to the cream of the Hollywood crop, but compared to the average Jane on the street? Absolutely. And again, she's not really my "type."
   46. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:22 AM (#3912798)
I'll agree with the uniqueness - she's sort of a type of attractive you see on tv frequently, but I guess I'm comparing her to 'normals' rather than tv people. I know what you mean, though - I'm more of brunette guy - but I can appreciate that she is really, really attractive.
   47. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:26 AM (#3912800)
Lackey seems like a reliever being forced to start, rather than a "horse" who is paid $16M a year to throw 200+ innings. He seems like he tires after 40-50 pitches.
   48. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:27 AM (#3912805)
Battle of the mouth-breathers!
   49. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:28 AM (#3912808)
Horse-faced mouth-breathers, even.

Horse-faced space dog!

Scutaro covering himself in glory today, with a spaghetti-flavored lob home.
   51. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:32 AM (#3912814)
That was some kind of awful relay throw by Scutaro.
   52. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:37 AM (#3912817)
Bad pitch, bad play off the wall, bad throw, bad throw.

Doing what?
   57. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:42 AM (#3912826)
Being a more expensive and uglier version of Dan Wheeler.
   58. Jay Seaver Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:45 AM (#3912828)
Carl! That's a start.
   59. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:46 AM (#3912829)
It seems so weird that Crawford succeeds again Sabathia when he's so helpless against most LHP.
   60. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:46 AM (#3912830)
That can't be right. Who put a glitch in the Matrix?

First Carl lays off the horrible junk in the dirt an now this.
   62. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:47 AM (#3912832)
It seems like Salty breaks bats almost as often as Johnny Damon, which I previously thought was impossible for anyone else to do.
   63. ray james Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:47 AM (#3912833)
maybe they're finally getting to Sabathia.
   64. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:48 AM (#3912834)

He seems like he's had stretches where he looks like the Crawford of old, even against lefties. Maybe that's when he's facing shitty lefties though, I don't know.
   66. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:48 AM (#3912839)
Seems like the last time the Sox faced CC he looked unhittable for 6 innings and then completely fell apart. Hope that's happening here...
   67. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:49 AM (#3912840)
Sabathia does NOT look sharp this inning.
   68. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:50 AM (#3912843)
This ump is terrible, even by the "just be consistent" standard.

Here's Scutaro, let's see how he can screw this up.
   69. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:50 AM (#3912844)
Be nice if, oh, 2 of those pitches were actually strikes.
   70. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:51 AM (#3912845)
Wow, tough K. Considering the strikezone that's been called all night it's ridiculous actually.
   71. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:51 AM (#3912847)
Umpire bails out Sabathia.
   72. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:52 AM (#3912849)
yay
   73. Jay Seaver Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:52 AM (#3912850)

That was the second horrible pitch of that at bat.
   76. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:54 AM (#3912855)
I was half expecting Girardi to go with the IBB to Gonzalez there...
   77. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:54 AM (#3912856)
hey, hey, hey, that's not a strike. Still.
   78. Biff, highly-regarded young guy Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:55 AM (#3912858)
Hey Gonzalez, stop falling for that.
   79. Darren Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:56 AM (#3912859)
How stupid can you be?
   80. Fancy Pants Handle struck out swinging Posted: August 31, 2011 at 12:57 AM (#3912862)
CC was on the ropes there. Too bad the ump let him off the hook with the Ellsbury k.

   83. Dan Posted: August 31, 2011 at 01:01 AM (#3912866)
Why is this team so bad at turning runners into runs?

Sox have 5 singles, a double, a homer, 2 walks, and a HBP and 2 runs.

Yankees have 3 singles, a double ,a homer, 3 walks and 4 runs.

And Lackey should be drawn and quartered for allowing a homer to ######' Cervelli.
   84. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: August 31, 2011 at 01:02 AM (#3912869)
