Why the hell did they have WMB positioned that far off the line? Awful positioning against Lawrie with a LHP on the mound.
   2. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:41 PM (#4167750)
That ball went right by Lester's feet and he didn't even try to make a play on it. What the ####?
   3. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:43 PM (#4167751)
I mention this everytime the Sox play a day game on getaway day but it feels like the Sox score about 1.3 runs/game on these games over the last couple of years. I remember looking it up once and my recollection is 100% wrong but it sure as hell feels that way.
   4. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:48 PM (#4167757)
Is there ANY chance Nava to Crawford won't be a massive downgrade?
   5. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:49 PM (#4167761)
Quite a bit. Probably not right away but I still expect Carl Crawford to be very good. You're putting too much stock in one bad year, this guy is a very very good player.
   6. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:50 PM (#4167762)
I guess Crawford should at least be a big defensive upgrade. Even if Crawford is just the shitty defender he was last year, he should be an improvement on Nava's defense.
   7. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:50 PM (#4167764)
Crawford will be coming off of 3 months of inactivity following an absolutely disastrous year.
   8. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:51 PM (#4167766)
Maybe Crawford will come back and hit .300/.350/.450 with GG defense and steal 25 bases in 3 months, but I'm not expecting it. My expectations for him at this point are just really low.
   9. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:53 PM (#4167767)
####### it's nice to see Pedroia hitting again. Especailly after the scare with his thumb on the dive in the top of the inning.

This is about what I expect. The injuries and the 2011 season are valid concerns but I think your expectations are too low. Players play to their level. I know that's a simplistic statement but there is a reason the statistical models work, they aren't perfect but if you expect the midpoint you are generally going to find guys meeting expectations.
   11. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:54 PM (#4167771)
Romero is all over the place, really like a crooked number here to take advantage.
   12. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:57 PM (#4167774)
I'd love a grand slam here but if Gonzo whiffs or hits into a DP I think Dan might be entertainingly creative.
   13. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:59 PM (#4167775)
Lucky.

Here comes a bomb.
   15. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:59 PM (#4167778)
I;ll just be glad if he avoids the GITP.

Hey a double play grounder that E5 (E3) plays into 2 runs and no outs! Woot!
   16. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 01:59 PM (#4167779)
Boom!
   17. Gch Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:00 PM (#4167780)
That was a horrible play, even by Encarnacion's standards.
   18. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:00 PM (#4167781)
I'd rather be lucky than good.
   19. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:00 PM (#4167782)
Middlebrooks ditched the beard?

Not a bomb, but that works.
   20. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4167784)
That's a play you'd expect a 6 win/year defender at third base to make.

(That's a shot at DRS and it's awful method of handling shifts, and yes DRS/year has Lawrie at 60 runs above average)
   21. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:02 PM (#4167785)
its*
   22. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:04 PM (#4167786)
So Valentine doesn't think Lillibridge is a better player than Darnell McDonald? That make that trade look good.
   23. Gch Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:06 PM (#4167787)

I like Lawrie's defense, but not enough to call him the best player in baseball. Sean really needs to get that fixed, it's embarrassing.

That the question is "McDonald or Lillibridge" doesn't make the trade look good. I mean, would "Lillibridge is a bit of a step up from Darnell McDonald" really get you fired up?
   25. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:08 PM (#4167790)
Got my crooked number and I'll go out on a limb and say Romero ain't going 9 today.

Not really but I assumed the Sox got Lillibridge because they thought at least some of his power against LHP last year was real. If Valentine turns around and plays McDonald over him (despite McDonald being a worse defender in CF), that just seems like another sign that the FO and Valentine aren't on the same page.
   27. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:14 PM (#4167794)
Wait, Buchholz had enough intestinal bleeding that he was in the ICU?????? I had no idea he was in that kind of shape. Holy ####.
   28. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:15 PM (#4167796)
I think the FO/Valentine same page ship has pretty well sailed. At least they got rid of Youkilis for him.
   29. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:16 PM (#4167798)
Kinda scary.

And the Sox just lost Oscar Tejada thanks to the Youkilis deal. Probably not a big deal but I would have preferred keeping him around to see if he developed. I'm just ###### about this trade.
   30. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4167799)
Tejeda, not Tejada, stupid edit function.
   31. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:17 PM (#4167800)
I mean, obviously the edit function is why I spelled it wrong in the first place.
   32. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:19 PM (#4167803)
You should've pretended you were using an iPad and blamed autocorrect.
   33. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:19 PM (#4167804)
Damn, nice work. That's what I use at night too, I should have thought of that. I Roystered that one.
   34. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:22 PM (#4167805)
Got the Cubs game on my 2nd screen now. Go Rizzo!
   35. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:23 PM (#4167806)
Wind is blowing out like crazy at Wrigley today with 90ยบ+ temperatures. I think Rizzo goes yard at least once today.
   36. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4167809)
Hey, Gonzalez got a real double that time!
   37. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4167810)
Not that they need any more runs, but Ross can't be held there. Bautista would have had to throw a strike to get him, and with this lead, you keep running.
   38. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4167812)
Oh, typed that too soon. Whoops!
   39. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:25 PM (#4167813)
Your fixation on former Sox farmhands is a little creepy.

What the hell happened on the single by Gonzo? Did he fall asleep and not see Ross or did Ross take a huge turn then retreat?
   40. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:27 PM (#4167814)
I don't blame Gonzalez for that. Ross should have absolutely been on third.
   41. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:30 PM (#4167815)
Your fixation on former Sox farmhands is a little creepy.

I like rooting for and watching talented players the Sox develop, even if they don't end up playing in Boston.
   42. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4167817)
Remy said Royster held Ross, but I don't think Ross has to be looking at the coach once he sees the ball carom off the short wall. He has to keep going, the lazy ####. Go reapply your Batman eyeblack, nancyboy.
   43. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:38 PM (#4167824)
How long is Farrell going to stick with Romero?
   44. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:39 PM (#4167825)
At least McDonald knows how to run the bases at Fenway, unlike Ross.
   45. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:39 PM (#4167827)
Wow. I didn't think Escobar would even have a play at first on that. Nicely done.
   46. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:41 PM (#4167829)
Nice day for Youkilis so far. 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
   47. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4167837)
Well, if he's going to do that better with a 6 run lead and no one on base.
   48. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:46 PM (#4167839)
No shame in letting Bautista hit a solo shot.
   49. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:47 PM (#4167840)
Pettitte left the game in NY with an injury after a comebacker got him in the lower leg. Yankees rotation thinning out quickly.
   50. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:47 PM (#4167841)
You can't park in that garage. That's just stupid. There are so many other places to park.
   51. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4167851)
Jenny Dell, you smell.
   52. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:55 PM (#4167853)
They have to go to the bullpen, unless they give up.
   53. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 02:56 PM (#4167854)
That was close.
   54. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:01 PM (#4167858)
Starting to believe Gonzalez may actually be coming around. He's even taking some inside pitches to LF now instead of trying to pull everything.
   55. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:04 PM (#4167862)
Rizzo just missed a home run off the lefty Niese in his 2nd AB today. Had to settle for a long double.
   56. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:11 PM (#4167871)
Don't understand why the Padres unloaded him so fast. He has the kind of power that would be able to survive in Petco.
   57. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:13 PM (#4167876)
I'd like to see them use the big lead to see if Lillibridge can cut it at SS or 2B. He's far more valuable if he can actually play middle infield competently.
   58. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:15 PM (#4167880)
Don't understand why the Padres unloaded him so fast. He has the kind of power that would be able to survive in Petco.

Choosing Yonder Alonso over him was absolutely and utterly foolish. Alonso never even slugged .500 at any level in the minor leagues, while Rizzo, like you said, has legitimate power even in a park like Petco. Rizzo is a better defender at first base too.
   59. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4167889)
I don't think there is much to be said about Ortiz at this point. This is remarkable.
   60. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:34 PM (#4167906)
So is Lester just not a very good pitcher anymore?
   61. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4167911)
I'm not willing to go that far but he pisses me off like no one else on the club. Pitchers are weird animals, they don't age like everyone else but it frustrates me that he doesn't seem to make himself better. He seems to make the same mistakes over and over.
   62. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:40 PM (#4167919)
Shift > WMB
   63. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:41 PM (#4167922)
Am I the only one who can't believe the Red Sox are dedicating airtime to a charity that's about sending girls to prom?
   64. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4167926)
I contrast Lester with the media whipping boy Beckett. Say what you will about Beckett but he has changed as a pitcher over time. As he loses velocity he is becoming more of a ground ball pitcher and remaining effective. It is somewhat similar to Schilling's evolution (though he is starting it younger). I don't think Lester will be able to adapt to a loss of stuff very well and that may be what we are seeing here.
   65. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:44 PM (#4167930)
Am I the only one who can't believe the Red Sox are dedicating airtime to a charity that's about sending girls to prom?

No. I remember seeing it the other day and thinking it was odd. There is something kind about allowing the underprivileged the chance to glam it up for a night, high school can be a tough place and time in a kid's life. Still, when I saw it the other day I felt like it was the kind of charity the blonde girl on Two Broke Girls would have supported.
   66. Dan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:48 PM (#4167936)
Wow. Pettitte has a broken ankle and will miss at least 6 weeks.
   67. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:50 PM (#4167942)
Wow that sucks. No Pettitte or Yankee fan am I but the way he had come back after taking a year off at his age was pretty impressive. As a baseball fan I admired it.
   68. Captain Joe Bivens, Pointless and Wonderful Posted: June 27, 2012 at 03:56 PM (#4167954)
Now stop giggling.
   69. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 04:01 PM (#4167960)
Oh I'll giggle for awhile yet.

Is it me or have the Jays had 3-4 innings in this game that the leadoff man made an out on the first pitch?
   70. Chip Posted: June 27, 2012 at 04:13 PM (#4167972)
That was impressive.
   71. Jose is an Absurd Sultan Posted: June 27, 2012 at 04:18 PM (#4167978)
First good homestand since August. That was much needed. Hopefully we have fully left .500 in the dust.
